Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa will become the first plastic-free hotel in the Riviera Maya

During the last years, the resort has maintained a strong commitment to the environment

During the last years, Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa has maintained a strong commitment to make the resort a conscious property with the environment, which contributes to the care of the planet, but, above all, that benefits the conservation of Mexican beaches.
For this, the property has implemented a strategy with which it plans to become the first hotel in the area to be free of plastic.
"For Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa is a constant commitment to contribute to the care of the environment, that is why we have started a plan that allows us to be a free resort of plastics in an estimated maximum of 2 years" commented Federico Echaiz, General Manager of Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa and added "additional to this, we have included within our experiences, a catalog of organic products and ecotourism activities that allow our visitors to enjoy the Mayan jungle in a completely natural environment" Echaiz finished.
For this, Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa has included a vanity kit 100% organic made by a local community of Yucatan that includes shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion, aloe vera and sandals. Additionally, the hotel has hammocks made by Mexican hands that help to solve the economy of more than 400 women in three Mayan communities of the Yucatan Peninsula: Tixkokob, Nolo and Mayapan.
In turn, the property has an alliance with Sky Ha, a company that filters rainwater and places it in plastic bottles. Through the program "recycle water" in which the hotel has joined and aims to collect empty bottles. In the same way, this intimate resort has a water treatment plant to reuse it in the irrigation of gardens and common areas.
For its part, under the program "Sustainable Flavors" the resort facing the sea guarantees its guests the consumption of fresh foods from the country and local communities with the aim of offering authentic flavors and ingredients of Mexican food.

Care and protection of the animal species of the region
Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa has two honey bee hives, Melipona, endemic species without stings, which produces a powerful and healing honey that is used in the signature rituals of the prestigious Kinan Spa. With this, it is intended that guests create awareness of the growing threat of extinction of bees and their impact on the environment.
Additionally, Saving Our Sharks, a divers' organization in Playa del Carmen, collaborates to study and raise awareness about the importance of the bull shark that visits the Caribbean Sea during the winter since its existence is vital for the balance of marine life and the environment.
