The Institute of Environmental Law of the Dominican Republic certified 29 beaches with the Blue Flag eco label for the period 2018/2019
The Institute of Environmental Law of the Dominican Republic (IDARD), through the process of evaluation and inspection of the requirements for obtaining the international certificate 'Blue Flag' has certified 29 beaches in the country for the period 2018/2019, of according to the information provided exclusively to Infotur Dominicano based on the request made, given the completion of the raising of the flags in each of these, this weekend.
In this way, the Dominican Republic destination that is worldwide a benchmark for its paradisiacal beaches, which year after year attract large numbers of visitors, in addition to its aesthetic appearance, this year 29 beaches have managed to be recognized as Blue Flag, a award that celebrates the most demanding standards of environmental quality in beaches at an international level.
The objective of Blue Flag is to promote the development of sustainable tourism policies for the establishment of clean, healthy, safe and accessible beaches, which constitute spaces for healthy recreation without compromising the integrity of coastal ecosystems.
To obtain this certificate, the suitability of the beaches must meet a series of criteria of responsible management, water quality, environmental education, safety, services and accessibility, which are considered by a demanding interdisciplinary jury, both nationally and internationally. .
The Blue Flag certificate is implemented in more than 4,000 sites and 45 countries. It is one of the most reliable voluntary eco-labels internationally. Nationally, the program is coordinated by the Institute of Environmental Law of the Dominican Republic (IDARD).
In that sense, it is evaluated among the benefits offered by the Blue Flag beaches we can highlight: the implementation of biweekly monitoring of water quality, availability of life saving equipment and trained personnel in first aid, spaces for access and enjoyment of users with disabilities , and a policy of environmental information and education, which promotes public awareness on issues such as respect for closures, conservation of vulnerable species and ecosystems, recycling of waste generated on the beach, among others.
All these conditions allow the recreational use of the beach to be harmonized with the conservation of this important ecosystem, which is so significant for achieving the sustainable development objectives of the Dominican Republic.
