Punta Cana is the second most visited city in Latin America

Punta Cana was positioned as the second most visited city in Latin America and number 58 worldwide, according to the recent ranking of 100 Destination Cities 2018 prepared by the Euromonitor International consulting firm, based in the United Kingdom.

The ranking, based on the number of arrivals of foreign tourists to different destinations -without considering cruises or passengers in transit-, shows that Punta Cana climbed three positions with respect to the previous year and that it is the destination of the region that grew the most in number of visitors, with a year-on-year increase of 19.3%.

"It is a great satisfaction that Punta Cana ranks among the 100 most popular tourist places in the world," says Magaly Toribio, Marketing Advisor of the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic (MITUR). "These data confirm the enormous appeal of this destination characterized by a first class offer in accommodation, entertainment, gastronomy, sports and other meetings that the current traveler is looking for".

According to the report, Punta Cana recorded a total of 4,348,100 visitors arrivals in 2018 compared to 3,643,500 posted in 2017, which is equivalent to a growth of 19.3%, the largest in Latin America and the fifth worldwide, surpassed only by Delhi, Agra and Chennai, in India, and Jerusalem.

Fate has not stopped climbing in the international ranking of Euromonitor International, since between 2012 and 2017 it increased six places, and then three more positions in 2018. Based on this performance, the report highlights the encouraging projections of destination for next years, highlighting "the objective established by the Dominican Republic of reaching 10 million visitors by 2023", as well as "the increase in air connectivity".

Located on the Dominican East coast, Punta Cana captivates tourists from all over the world. In addition to being a destination of sun and beach par excellence, it offers visitors fun, a vibrant nightlife and the most varied cuisine, with options that include the typical Dominican dishes, vegan options and the best international cuisine.

Favorite place for golf lovers, Punta Cana hosts a large number of top-level courses with stunning views of the sea, many of them designed by world-renowned figures, including the Corales field, Tom Fazio's design and the PGA Tour's headquarters , and Punta Espada, developed by Jack Nicklaus. In addition, less than an hour away, is the famous Teeth of the Dog course in Casa de Campo, in La Romana, designed by Pete Dye and considered one of the best in the world.

Adventurous visitors will also find innumerable options, such as safaris on land, diving at El Acuario, enjoying the natural environment of the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park, kayaking, hiking and sailing through a fabulous mangrove tunnel in the Bávaro Lagoon or having fun with activities such as ziplining, canopy and bungee trampoline in the numerous theme parks.

Less than an hour from Punta Cana, the picturesque fishing village Boca de Yuma is a recommended getaway. It offers white sand beaches with restaurants and bars on the coast, river trips to observe the birds and the possibility of knowing more about the Dominican culture and nature visiting the Cotubanamá National Park and the gigantic Berne Cave that is found there and abounds in petroglyphs of the native peoples.
