Medellín, city expert in innovation, opens its doors to the tourism sector

Antioquia grew 6% in the arrival of foreign visitors between January-May 2019

The capital of Antioquia has demonstrated with important international recognition, why it is listed as an innovative city. The opening of cultural spaces and entrepreneurship, the investment in technological solutions and infrastructure, among others, has catapulted this destination to be admired by foreign travelers and by the same Colombians.

Thus, this recognition that Medellín has won, has been very attractive for travelers who seek to know not only the city but also the different destinations of the department, which has led to large growth in tourism figures, because in agreement With Migración Colombia, Antioquia received a total of 191,489 foreign visitors during the period January-May 2019 (figure includes Venezuela), which represents a growth of 6% compared to the same period of 2018.
 
The same source reveals that the most visited city of the department was Medellín, with 181,276 records during the same months, which represents a 5% growth compared to the same period of 2018; in second place, Rionegro is with 1,794 travelers and an increase of 30%; and Envigado with 1,498 and an increase of 40%. In addition, in relation to the countries from which the largest number of tourists visiting Antioquia comes, there are the United States, Mexico, Peru and Spain.
 
Likewise, it is noteworthy the growth that has been revealed in the movement of passengers, because according to Civil Aviation, during the same period of 2019, the José María Córdova Airport registered 2,640,996 domestic passengers transported, growing by 17% and occupying the second position at the national level, only surpassed by El Dorado de Bogotá.
 
As for international passengers during January and May 2019, this airport registered a total of 753,038 passengers, 8% more than the same 2018 report.
 
Currently, Antioquia has a total of 133 international frequencies operated by 12 airlines and 807 national frequencies managed by 5 airlines.
