Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal thanked the Southeast Airport Group (ASUR) for the confidence in Yucatan, which is reflected in the investment of 2,500 million pesos over the next 5 years to carry out the project to expand the International Airport of Mérida "Lic Manuel Crescencio Rejón y Alcalá ”, which will allow it to go from a capacity to receive 2 million to 4.7 million passengers and respond to the important moment the State is experiencing in the matter.
During the Session of the Airport Advisory Committee, headed by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal and the Regional Airports Director of Grupo ASUR, Héctor Navarrete Muñoz, a report was presented on the achievements of this air terminal prior to the end of 2019, where He stressed that it has been one of the best years in its history, since only from January to October recorded the arrival of 2 million 287 thousand passengers, which represented a growth of 13.59%, compared to the same period last year.
The above is a product of the joint work with ASUR and the intense promotion strategy at national and international level of Yucatan as an ideal destination to visit and invest that the Government of Vila Dosal performs from the first day of its administration, making known the attractions of the been around the world and offer more and more connection options with different points of the globe.
Within that framework, the Governor was informed that Yucatan, from this site, is connected to 17 destinations, of which 13 are national and 4 are international, which allowed that, until October, 43,936 operations were registered, of which 94% are national and the rest international. These movements were achieved thanks to the presence of 11 commercial airlines and another 7 freighters.
Currently, the direct air connection is maintained from Mérida to 13 national sites, which are El Bajío, Cancún, Chihuahua, Mexico City, Hermosillo, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Querétaro, Oaxaca, Tijuana, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Veracruz and Villahermosa; as well as international airports in Houston, Havana, Miami and Toronto.
Likewise, it was indicated that this air terminal has become a primary link in the productive chain and the increase of the competitiveness of the state, since the export and import industry has generated 18,678 tons transported by year this route, of which 54% are output load.
Among the movements are those of the aeronautical, jeweler and dental sector, covering 67% national destinations and 33% different points abroad.
In this regard, Navarrete Muñoz pointed out that, as a sign of the good results, this year the most important month in the number of arrivals to this terminal was held in July, so it is expected that in December good news will continue to arrive and continue happening goals.
“That is why we wanted to develop within this master plan that builds the development of the state of Yucatán. It is a very important work that will last 5 years and will transform the airport, because it will allow growth to double what you have today, ”he added.
When giving more details about the expansion project, the director indicated that, within its first phase, the intervention of the documentation area and the facade is contemplated, providing greater facilities and better spaces to serve passengers. It is expected to be ready next year.
While, he continued, in his second stage, work will be carried out in the waiting rooms, inspection points, luggage bands, authorities building, boarding and disembarking positions, as well as the rehabilitation of pavement on runways and taxiways, as well as complementary works.
Work includes increasing positions for aircraft in the boarding and disembarking area on commercial platforms and seating in boarding rooms, better spaces for documentation rows, inspections, as well as more comfortable and safe luggage bands, and improvements in areas of migration and customs review.
After the meeting, Vila Dosal made a tour, where he verified the work that is being carried out on the outside of the building, a work in which 300 people are currently working.
