Iberostar approach to sustainability
In line with its commitment to be a reference in responsible tourism, Grupo Iberostar launched its Wave of Change movement in 2017, a pioneering initiative designed in line with Objective 14 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), "Submarine life". Wave of Change works on three fundamental pillars: the elimination of single-use plastics and moving towards a circular economy, the promotion of responsible fish consumption and the improvement of coastal health. In this line, both hotels - Iberostar Selection Bávaro and Coral Level of Iberostar Selection Bávaro - have rooms completely free of single-use plastics, as well as osmosis fountains in the common areas of the hotel.
Last June, Iberostar opened, also at the Iberostar Selection Bávaro, its first onshore coral laboratory, with the aim of studying the impact of coral reef bleaching and which also serves as a genetic bank for various species of corals.
As part of the awareness and education tasks that Iberostar is promoting, the visit to the coral laboratory is offered to hotel clients and visitors. In addition, it is one of 140 educational activities that the Star Camp program offers to children and adolescents, and with which both they and their parents can learn about the importance of coral reefs and witness their beauty firsthand.
