Spirit Airlines announces direct route from New Orleans to San Pedro Sula

New Orleans has one of the largest populations of Hondurans in the United States. Flights will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays

Spirit Airlines announced that it is expanding its reach from New Orleans, with new direct flights to two international destinations. The fastest growing airline in the United States will fly from New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY) to Cancun, Mexico (CUN), starting June 10 *. The next day, Spirit will open the service to San Pedro Sula, Honduras (SAP) *. The airline will also increase the frequency of flights to Orlando International Airport (MCO), with an additional daily flight, beginning April 22.

New Orleans has one of the largest populations of Hondurans in the United States. Spirit flights to Ramón Villeda Morales airport in San Pedro Sula will make it easier for passengers to visit their friends and family, and will make the city more accessible to tourists. Flights to San Pedro Sula will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, with connection options the other days of the week.

Spirit began its operation in New Orleans in January 2013 with flights to Dallas / Fort Worth (DFW). Currently, the airline offers direct flights from MSY to a total of 22 national and international destinations, growing markedly throughout the seven years since its first route in the city. The growth of the airline in New Orleans made Spirit the third largest airline in the city (measured by the miles of seats available). The airline flew to approximately 1.7 million passengers from and to New Orleans in 2019, an increase of 20 percent year-over-year, with plans to continue growing in 2020.

“We are very proud to announce our direct flights from New Orleans to two international destinations. Our Passengers in New Orleans have asked us for international connectivity and we are happy to provide them with even more opportunities to travel to two new destinations, ”said Ted Christie, President and CEO of Spirit Airlines. “These new routes are part of our commitment to invest in our Passengers. Whether traveling to Cancun for pleasure or to San Pedro Sula to see family and friends, we will continue to connect our passengers with the communities and destinations they are looking for the most. ”

New Orleans is the sixth city in the United States with direct flights from Spirit Airlines to Cancun. Spirit will operate four weekly flights to Cancun: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with connection options available the other days of the week.

“New Orleans has one of the largest populations of Hondurans in the United States, and we are delighted that Spirit Airlines now offers a direct service from MSY to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, providing a much needed connection for our community. On top of that, the additional service to Cancun, Mexico will give our passengers even more options to travel. As Spirit is the fastest growing airline at our airport, we are grateful for your commitment to this community and look forward to a long-term relationship with this airline, ”said Kevin Dolliole, Director of Aviation at Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans.
