The whale season began in Uruguay

The Organization for the Conservation of Cetaceans (OCC) presented its proposal "Ruta de la Ballena Franca", a responsible and sustainable tourism program

Once again, the Ministry of Tourism accompanied the seasonal whale launches organized by the Organization for the Conservation of Cetaceans (OCC), this time they were developed in an online form with free access in Piriápolis, Punta del Este and La Paloma.

Uruguay aims to redouble efforts to develop responsible tourism for whale watching, as well as everything that has to do with ocean tourism.

The Organization for the Conservation of Cetaceans (OCC) presented its proposal "Ruta de la Ballena Franca", a responsible and sustainable tourism program that includes an interpretive coastal circuit through the strategic sites -heights, platforms and natural elevations-, for the search and sighting of the southern right whale, between Maldonado and Rocha, which involves 293 km. along the coastal routes No. 10 and No. 9.

The duration of the tour: four hours and 30 minutes. This can take two to three days. Other attractions include birds and sea lions (Isla de lobos), landscapes and routes of tourist interest, lagoons, lighthouses, mountain ranges, psamophilous forests, ombú forests and national parks such as Cabo Polonio and Santa Teresa. Route that the Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) has disseminated in various instances, brochures, billboards on public roads, tourism fairs, WEB and social networks.

On behalf of the MINTUR authorities, the National Director of Tourism, Martín Pérez, and the Technical Advisor in Tourism, Oscar Iroldi, participated, who expressed the greetings of the Minister and Undersecretary who were in the interior of the country, also accompanying other activities in the sector.

In these moments of pandemic it is important to "work in coordination with other institutions, the private sector and civil society" to draw up strategies that regulate, disseminate and commercialize proposals in natural places, outdoors, respecting physical distance and even more so if It is about enjoying these mammals as special as whales, which visit us every year from July to October, Pérez and Iroldi agreed.

For her part, Mónica Lozano, a reference of the product from MINTUR, referred to the actions that the portfolio has been implementing since 2000, not only in terms of raising awareness and promoting the activity, but above all in support of the preparation of a Decree of Law that regulates and regulates the approaches to these cetaceans by individuals; support for joining the International Whaling Commission (IWC), where Uruguay votes against whaling; the creation of Law 19,128, which declares the territorial sea and the exclusive economic zone of the country "Whale and Dolphin Sanctuary"; as well as the training and organization of various activities in this regard.

At the close, there was a concert in front of the sea with musicians such as Julio Víctor González (better known as El Zucará) who delighted everyone through the platform with songs honoring the sea and the whales.
