The airline restarts direct flights from San Pedro Sula to Fort Lauderdale and Houston on August 17
Spirit Airlines will restart direct flights from San Pedro Sula's Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and connections.
Spirit will resume its commercial flights in San Pedro Sula, since Honduras closed its borders in mid-March, with more weekly flights to the United States, compared to other airlines.
“We are very happy to be back operating in Honduras and to be able to connect the Honduran population with cities like Fort Lauderdale and Houston,” said Camilo Martelo, Director of International Airports for Spirit Airlines. "We thank the government of Honduras for the great collaboration during these months of pandemic to carry out multiple humanitarian flights and thus have been able to help thousands of people who were seeking to return home."
Since the beginning of April, Spirit Airlines has operated more than 170 humanitarian flights and flown more than 23,000 people between the United States and nine Latin American countries, with Honduras being one of the main collaborators in this mission. Spirit continues to work with different governments to organize additional flights to countries that still require this support.
Passengers flying to San Pedro Sula must previously register through the National Migration Institute Portal. A COVID test is also required, according to the statement from the National Government of Honduras. According to the established rules, if a Passenger cannot comply with these requirements, they will not be allowed to board the plane at their point of origin. The use of cloth face covers is mandatory during all Spirit Airlines flights. For more information on the requirements to enter the country, visit the website of the National Institute of Migration of Honduras.
Security protocols
Caring for our Passengers and Team Members is Spirit's absolute priority. The airline has a security approach comprised of several protocols including a regulation requiring all Passengers and Team Members to wear cloth face covers. Spirit's fleet is equipped with state-of-the-art, high-efficiency particulate matter (HEPA) filters that capture 99.97% of the particulates and filter the air of pollutants every 3 minutes.
The airline has also expanded aircraft cleaning protocols between each flight, including an additional focus on frequent contact points such as handles, seat belt buckles, folding trays and armrests. Spirit also uses two EPA-registered fogging treatments. The former applies a safe, high-grade disinfectant that is effective against coronaviruses. The second uses an antimicrobial product that forms an invisible barrier on all surfaces that kills bacteria and viruses on contact for 30 days.
