The bidding and award process for the construction of the second runway was completed. With this work and the existing runway, the operating capacity will double
The bidding and awarding process for the works of the “Air Side” of the Jorge Chávez International Airport Expansion Project for the construction of the second runway was completed. With this work and the existing runway, the airport's operating capacity will double. Up to 80 landing and takeoff operations can be carried out per hour. All on a surface that will triple the airfield of the current operation.
After a rigorous selection process that summoned 8 consortia, made up of recognized national and international companies with proven experience in the aeronautical and construction sectors, the second runway (Package 2.2) was awarded to the Inti Punku Consortium, made up of the Sacyr and GyM companies. The applicants presented their work proposals in terms of execution, technical, operational and compliance capacity, taking into account construction times and knowledge of the local environment. Likewise, given the current context, the presentation of mitigation strategies under new health and safety standards was added as a requirement in the face of COVID-19.
The scope of this work package (Package 2.2) includes the construction of a second runway of 3,480 meters in length, a network of more than 10 kilometers of new taxiways, approach lights, beacon systems, aids to navigation, medium voltage systems and control and surveillance equipment. It should be noted that the winning consortium will begin work from September on a total area to be intervened of more than 600 hectares. The new runway will start operating at the end of 2022.
With this award, all the bidding processes for the “Air Side”, which includes the second runway and the new control tower, are concluded. All the work packages corresponding to the “Air Side” add up to a total investment amount of USD 400 million, approximately, by the concessionaire.
“We are proud to continue with the scheduled works of the Expansion Project despite the adverse situation facing the aviation and construction sectors. We have awarded the entire "Air Side" which constitutes a fundamental component for the future air operation. The control tower is already under construction and the second runway will begin works from September. At LAP we are committed to continuing to advance so that Peru can have one of the most important airports in South America ”.
It should be remembered that to this new award are added those made in 2019, where 12 contractors carried out the early work, that of December 2019, where the Nuevo Limatambo Consortium was selected for the earthmoving works, and that of Last May, which was awarded to the Wayra Consortium for the construction of the new Control Tower.
This is an emblematic project for the country, which will undoubtedly bring benefits for Lima and Callao, and will generate greater job opportunities for more Peruvians, mainly for those in the project's Area of Direct Influence (AID). For these jobs, it is expected to have peaks of up to 1,500 workers in the field, approximately.
