The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, officially announced this morning the creation of the Museum of Mexican Hospitality, which will have its headquarters in the Magic Town of Orizaba, Veracruz, the cradle of the lodging service in Mexico and the American continent. .

He expressed that as a support and pillar of tourist activity, the hotel industry deserves to have a great museum that proudly shows tourists and especially academia the legacy of this relevant sector.

He thanked the municipal president of Orizaba, Igor Roji, whom he considered one of the best mayors in Mexico for his great vision in the beautification and progress of the city he governs, for facilitating the facilities that will house the Museum's headquarters and urged the hoteliers from all over the country to make this project their own, donating or handing over photographs, furniture, work instruments, uniforms or any other object that at the time was of great use to the lodging establishments and today is an invaluable jewel due to its character historical.

“To start the collection, I have given this museum the 2000 National Cash Register machine and a plug switch, which were used by a server in 1971, when I had the honor of being a receptionist and telephone operator at the prestigious Hotel del Paseo de la Ciudad de México. I have guarded them both jealously for almost five decades, and it is a pleasure to offer them today to be appreciated by the tourist and academic community, as well as the general public, ”he said.

Also with the presence of the national president of the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels (AMHM), Juan José Fernández Carrillo, and the president of the National Association of Hotel Chains (ANCH), Luis Barrios Sánchez, the secretary Torruco Marqués, who in In 2000 he presided over the AMHM, he stated that over the centuries, the hotel industry has become a dynamic, solid and growing sector, which has consolidated itself as an activity that generates foreign exchange, jobs and investment, capable of providing to its guests a comfortable and safe stay with excellent quality of service.

He added that during the new millennium, the hotel industry has shown constant and rapid growth, with the construction, just last year, of 22 thousand new rooms, with which an infrastructure of 830 thousand rooms and more than 23 thousand lodging establishments, which consolidates Mexico in the seventh position in the world in hotel infrastructure.

“The hospitality industry in Mexico has undergone a great transformation over the years, to become the backbone of tourism activity, which in 2019 represented 28.3 percent of tourism GDP and generated nine percent of employment in the sector ”, he asserted.

He added that the foregoing has promoted formal education and training on the job, in the context of the professionalization of tourism activity, since there is currently an enrollment of 120 thousand Tourism students or related careers in the country, one thousand 152 institutions of tourist education, 142 degrees and 1,224 educational programs.
