Tortuguero National Park, a must-see ecotourism attraction in Costa Rica

This weekend the fourth count of birds took place with an official record of 186 species, a figure that marks a significant rebound

Tortuguero National Park is imposing and majestic from any angle you look at it and it is undoubtedly one of the most intense places in Costa Rica in terms of its wide biodiversity, including the large number of bird species that can be observed during the tours of its canals or other areas.
Precisely, to corroborate this data, this weekend the fourth edition of the bird count was carried out and a group of approximately 70 people, were given the task of dividing themselves into 9 water and land routes.
The objective of the team of scientists, guides, volunteers and experts in bird watching was to count the largest number of species in a systematic way for several hours, starting at 5 am on Saturday, January 30.
Among the results obtained, there was a historical record of 186 migratory species typical of the area, surpassing the records of the last three previous editions by more than 35. As part of the first finds, the identification of the gorgiroja ant-tanager stood out, a species of which there was no recent record in Tortuguero.
As explained by Manuel Campbell, coordinator of this edition of the count and an official of the Tortuguero National Park, this time the logistics improved significantly and, for the first time, there was a record number of birds observed. "We achieved a significant rebound compared to the counts registered in recent years and it certainly fills us with pride as a reflection of the biodiversity present in Tortuguero", concluded the expert.

Avistourism reinforces itself as a niche
“For the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, it is important to support this type of initiative because it is one of our main pillars that includes research, protection and development of bird watching tourism. This year, as part of the activities of World Wetlands Day that is celebrated every February 2, the fourth bird count was carried out in Tortuguero with remarkable success, with a new record of 186 species, which allows you to monitor the birds in this spectacular habitat ”, highlighted Rafael Soto, coordinator of the National Bird Route program of the ICT.
This count fills scientists and experts in avitourism and nature with optimism since, precisely, the Northeast Caribbean Humedal (where Tortuguero is located) has the RAMSAR category granted to sites on the planet for its great ecological value.
According to ICT data, in Costa Rica there are more than 900 species of birds registered throughout the different tourist regions and observation sites.
Bird watching tourism represents one of the niches that is in constant development and allows travelers to live unique experiences, wide-ranging species observation, without having to travel enormous distances.
