Becomes First U.S. airline to allow individual customers to purchase sustainable aviation fuel
United Airlines today announces the launch of the Eco-Skies AllianceSM program, the first of its kind involving world-leading corporations working with the airline to power future flights in a more sustainable way. By collectively contributing to sustainable aviation fuel purchases, Eco-Skies Alliance leaders will work with United to purchase emission reductions of 3.4 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel this year. With its emission reductions of nearly 80% on a life cycle basis compared to conventional jet fuel, this is enough sustainable aviation fuel to eliminate approximately 31,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions,
As inaugural participants, the following companies are taking the lead within their respective industries and reducing their travel-related impact on the environment at source by creating increased demand for sustainable aviation fuel.

"While we have partnered with companies for years to help them offset emissions from their flights, we applaud those who participate in the Eco-Skies Alliance for recognizing the need to go beyond carbon offsets and support fuel-powered flights. of sustainable aviation, which will lead to more accessible supplies and ultimately lower emissions, "said United CEO Scott Kirby. "This is just the beginning. Our goal is to add more companies to the Eco-Skies Alliance, buy more sustainable aviation fuel, and work together to find other innovative paths to decarbonization."
United has made the airline industry's largest investment in sustainable aviation fuel and has purchased more sustainable aviation fuel than any other airline in the world. The airline will leverage its partnership with World Energy to source sustainable aviation fuel for Eco-Skies Alliance program participants. World Energy, which received a sustainability certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials, produces sustainable aviation fuel near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), making it conveniently accessible for United operations.
In addition to the Eco-Skies Alliance program, which is designed for corporate customers, United is also inviting individual customers to join the airline's efforts to enable more sustainable air travel in two new ways. First, customers can contribute funds to purchase sustainable aviation fuel, which United will use to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its flights compared to traditional jet fuel. Second, United is helping people connect with elected representatives to advocate for policies that make air travel more sustainable.
"We know that there is growing demand from a wide range of our customers, including corporations, freight forwarders and individuals who share the same concern as us: that climate change is the most pressing problem of our generation," Kirby said.
