Mexico is positioned as a leader in America in Blue Flag certifications

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, participated in the Second Meeting of the Blue Flag Mexico 2021 National Jury, in which it was announced that for the 2021-2022 season, according to the Results Report of the International Jury, our The country already has 94 sites with this badge.

These 94 flags include 62 beaches, in nine states of the country; three marinas, in two states; and 29 boats in Quintana Roo.

The jury highlighted that with these results Mexico is positioned as the country with the most beaches, marinas and sustainable tourism vessels distinguished by Blue Flag in America; it enters the Top Ten by occupying the tenth position of 47 countries in the world that participate in this program; in addition to endorsing the first place in sustainable tourism vessels globally.

With this, Secretary Torruco Marqués emphasized, our country now has four more sites than last year. “Mexico is thus confirming its avant-garde position in the continental and world spheres, since there is a sustained growth in the number of blue flags each season. Likewise, it reiterates its commitment to the care and preservation of the environment ”.

He added that distinctive such as this, which promote the sustainable development of coastal environments, represent an added value for any tourist destination, and even more so in the face of the adverse circumstances that tourism in the world is going through due to Covid-19.

“My recognition to all those who in one way or another are involved in the conservation of beaches and marinas, through better schemes and sustainable practices, achieving year after year that there are more and more blue flags that wave in our tourist destinations. ", He said.

He added that nature is requiring us to practice eminently sustainable tourism, which respects the natural, cultural and social environment, so that tourism activity continues to be a source of progress.

He congratulated all the destinations that have been awarded the Blue Flag Distinction. "I am convinced that year after year there will be more," he assured and stressed that, in the face of a growing demand for beaches not only free of pollutants, but also operated under ecological schemes, Blue Flag works to undertake responsible actions, which are becoming more and more relevant. .

In this sense, he stressed that it is important to recognize the work carried out by the Foundation for Environmental Education Mexico, through this program, because as an authority on tourism, “we are certain that international criteria are applied and that there is follow-up, in a quantitative, objective and independent way, to the environmental compliance evaluation processes ”.

He stated that these efforts also contribute significantly to improving the perception of our tourist destinations and generating greater confidence in the tourists who visit us, a fundamental factor for the process of reactivating the tourism sector in Mexico.

"The Blue Flag distinction, which is awarded to beaches, marinas and tourist boats for their excellence in issues such as environmental management and management, safety and services, application of environmental education activities and water quality, requires the harmonious participation of authorities , users, civil society organizations and service providers, because by working together we will always achieve better results ”, he said.

According to national and international juries, in Baja California Sur the municipality of La Paz has a beach with this distinctive, while Los Cabos has 22; in Guerrero, Acapulco has five and Zihuatanejo, four; in Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta has two; in Nayarit, Bahía de Banderas has one, and Santa María del Oro, one; in Oaxaca, Huatulco has two.

In Quintana Roo, Benito Juárez has ten; Isla Mujeres, three; Puerto Morelos, one; and Solidaridad, six. In Sonora, Puerto Peñasco has one; in Tamaulipas, Ciudad Madero has one; and in Yucatán, Progreso has two.

Also participating in the meeting were Joaquín Díaz Ríos, executive director of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE Mexico); and Humberto Hernández Haddad, Undersecretary of Quality and Regulation of the Ministry of Tourism, among other officials.
