Costa Rica resumes the National Plan for Sustainable Tourism Development

"We are sure, as it has been in the past, that from the shared vision between the public and private sectors we will generate meeting points to establish the relevant objectives, goals, strategies and projects," said Tourism Minister Gustavo J. Sagura

With the aim of raising the strategic thinking of the Costa Rican tourism industry for the five-year period 2022-2027, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) began updating the National Plan for Sustainable Tourism Development this week in a first virtual meeting with members of the private sector .

The task, which will culminate in the last week of December with the delivery of the draft to the ICT Board of Directors for review, consists of resuming the update that began in 2019 and stopped in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The proposal of a new Tourism Plan for the period 2022-2027 is of special importance in these times of change in which new challenges and opportunities appear for the tourism development of Costa Rica. We are sure, as it has been in the past, that from the shared vision between the public and private sectors we will generate meeting points to establish the objectives, goals, strategies and relevant and necessary projects for the strengthening and repositioning of our tourism industry. looking to the future ”, said Gustavo J. Segura, Rector Minister of Tourism.

The Strategic Plan is dynamic, although it plans for the future, it is constantly reviewed and adjusted, seeking to set the great goals for the industry and continue to bring social progress to the different communities and subsectors of the country.

For the current update, approaches such as sustainability or interest in small businesses will not be changed, nor will essential elements of the Costa Rican tourism model recognized worldwide.

In addition, attention will be maintained on the emergencies of the sector produced by the pandemic, whose objective is the reactivation of tourism and the national economy.

"This process is not going to distract us from the day to day, but rather it is a space to see the future on the road to recovery with the increase in tourist arrivals, the return of airlines and the increase in weekly travel frequencies" added the Minister.

The Tourism Planning and Development Directorate of the ICT has led the preparation of these plans since 2002 with the aim of marking the route together with the tourism sector, generating a country vision.
