The low-cost airline will fly to 20 domestic and 11 international destinations
Today Spirit Airlines announced its new routes from Miami International Airport (MIA). The company's operation begins with service to nine destinations, which will eventually reach a total of 31 nonstop flights when the expansion is completed in November and January. Spirit will fly to 20 domestic and 11 international markets.
"Launching nonstop flights to 31 destinations from Miami is a great achievement for us, and we want to share our excitement with our guests," said Ted Christie, president and CEO of Spirit Airlines. “We want Free Spirit® winners to be able to choose their own destination as flexibility is what we are promoting in Miami - multiple daily flights to all parts of the United States and even South America. Combined with flights from West Palm Beach and our position as the largest international airline operating out of Fort Lauderdale, we are giving our guests more options than ever from South Florida. ”
“Spirit Airline is the only large-scale American firm headquartered in South Florida, and welcoming them to our airport is extremely special,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “We are proud to welcome the significant flight investment, jobs, and commercial earnings that Spirit brings to MIA and Miami-Dade County, and we are excited to see the company grow while offering more travel options for our residents and visitors. "
"We are immensely grateful for Spirit's decision to not only expand into MIA, but with a considerable presence in 31 cities," said Ralph Cutié, MIA director and CEO. "With more than 200 weekly flights for January, Spirit will instantly become one of our busiest passenger airlines, giving our travelers even more options to fly to and from Miami-Dade County."
Spirit's initial itinerary is large enough for the airline to rank second among the largest in MIA. Adding service from MIA is the next chapter in Spirit's story as the airline continues to move forward to meet the demand for high-value travel to and from South Florida. The airline will hire more than 200 people to join the Spirit Family and 16 brand-new Airbus A320neo aircraft will also be added to be delivered this year. By next year, Spirit plans to add another 24 new aircraft to its Fit Fleet® fleet, which is among the youngest in the industry.
