INGUAT prepares Tourism Development Plan for the municipality of Santiago Atitlán

It will allow this destination to grow in a sustainable way in the coming years

The authorities of the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism, delivered to the municipal authorities of Santiago Atitlán, Sololá a planning instrument, which will allow this destination to grow in a sustainable way, embodied in the Tourism Development Plan for the municipality of Santiago, Atitlán.

This plan is aligned with the Guatemala Sustainable Tourism Master Plan 2015-2025, which proposes a strategic orientation that will make it possible to take advantage of the natural and cultural resources that this destination has for the benefit of the local community, taking the necessary measures so that tourism is sustainable.

The Director General of INGUAT, Mynor Cordón pointed out “This plan will serve as a starting point to generate a more attractive and innovative dynamism in the beautiful municipality of Santiago Atitlán. For the work team, it is very satisfying to complete this collaborative and participatory process carried out together with the local actors ”.

Previously, the following tourism development plans have been prepared and successfully delivered in:

• Monterrico, Santa Rosa;

• Flores and Sayaxché from Petén;

• Salcajá and the City of Quetzaltenango;

• Livingston, Izabal;

• The Community Tourism Development Plan aimed at seven communities in Antigua Guatemala;

• Plans for the municipalities of Cobán and Lanquín de Alta Verapaz;

• San Marcos, San Pedro Sacatepéquez, Tacaná, Tajumulco, Sibinal, San Rafael Pie de la Cuesta, San Pablo, Malacatán, Ocós, La Blanca and Ayutla de San Marcos;

• Totonicapán, Momostenango, San Andrés Xecul, San Cristóbal Totonicapán and San Francisco El Alto de Totonicapán;

• Panajachel, Santa Catarina Palopó and San Antonio Palopó de Sololá;

For this plan, we had the services of a consultancy specialized in tourism planning with an investment of Q. 99,866.50.

For INGUAT, the participation of the municipality, the public and private sectors, and other key stakeholders in the tourism field is important in executing the plan. Therefore, it is expected that this tool will facilitate management before the different national and international cooperation entities that contribute to the development of tourism in this town.
