Tianguis Turístico reflects the growth of tourism in Mexico

The Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco Marqués reported that in the first quarter of the year the sector employed 4.4 million people, exceeding the figure achieved in 2019

Within the framework of the 46th edition of the Tianguis Turístico México 2022, which takes place in Acapulco, Guerrero, the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that in the first quarter of 2022, tourism employment reached 4 million 388 thousand people employed, which represents an increase of 3.3% compared to the same period in 2019.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) indicated that in the period from January to March 2022, tourism employment represented 8.6% of the population employed in the tourism sector in Mexico.

He stressed that this shows that the recovery in tourism employment continues, also showing, in the first quarter of 2022, a growth of 2.9%, equivalent to 123 thousand 930 more employed people, compared to 4 million 264 thousand people in the previous quarter.

Torruco Marqués pointed out that in his annual comparison, there was an increase of 703 thousand 538 people employed in the sector that produces tourism goods and services, equivalent to a growth of 19.1% compared to the first quarter of 2021.

During the working day at the Tourist Tianguis, the head of Sectur held various meetings with important leaders of the national and international tourism industry, as well as state governors and secretaries of Tourism.

With Christophe Didier, Vice President of Global Sales of Copa Airlines, they discussed the importance of air connectivity. Didier stressed that Mexico was the most important country for the airline during the pandemic, because it was open all the time. Which allowed him to maintain his flights.

The Secretary of Tourism also met with Jorge Schoenenberger Arnaiz, CEO of Viajes el Corte Inglés Travel Group, with whom he discussed the future plans of the company, and how to promote international tourism, and especially Spanish tourism to Mexico.

He participated in the presentation of the Guanajuato tourist series “And you, what are you going to do?”. He was accompanied by the Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo, and the Secretary of State Tourism, Juan José Álvarez Brunel, whose purpose is to promote the promotion of the entity's tourist attractions.

In that same sense, he attended the delivery of the Tourist Brand "Morelos la Eterna Primavera", which was attended by the governor of the entity, Cuauhtémoc Blanco Bravo, and where the strategy that they will carry out was highlighted, which has with the support of the private initiative and authorities of the three levels of government.

Torruco Marqués participated in the celebration of the 100 years of Estrella de Oro, where he stressed that foreign transport represents a great stimulus for the tourist development of the regions, since it allows more travelers to get closer to new destinations in the country, generating, in turn, a greater demand for the service in a very positive dynamic. As part of the celebration, the Secretary of Tourism presented an award to José Miguel Díaz, general manager of Estrella de Oro.

In the official presentation of the “Mar de Cortés” brand, Torruco Marqués pointed out, before the Secretary of Tourism of Sonora, Célida López Cárdenas; Sinaloa, Maria del Rosario Torres Noriega; Baja California Sur, Rosa Maribel Collins Sánchez; Nayarit, Juan Enrique Suarez of Real Tostado; and the Undersecretary of Tourism of Baja California, José Quiñónez Ramírez, who make up this tourism alliance; the different projects that are carried out in the northwestern region of the country.

Among these are the anchor products and high-impact events, such as the Mazatlán Aquarium, in Sinaloa; the Altar Desert race, in Sonora; the Islas Marías Comprehensive project, in Nayarit; the race From Sea to Sea, in Baja California Sur; the Chinesca in Mexicali and the Marathon between Vineyards in Ensenada, Baja California; as well as the promotion of the nautical tourism, sport fishing and hunting segments. In addition, he highlighted the road works and connectivity plans to capitalize on the tourist offer of these entities.

The head of Sectur learned about the project of Peter E. Pincus, CEO of CCRA, which consists of training on the destination Mexico, which includes the benefits of culture and geography, products and services, to increase international visitors to our country .

He also attended the celebration of the 25th anniversary of RIU Hotels & Resorts in Mexico, where Joan Trian Riu, managing director of the hotel chain, recognized the leadership of Secretary Miguel Torruco Marqués, for knowing how to guide the sector and achieve its recovery; and he showed his willingness to continue investing in our country.

For his part, the Secretary of Tourism thanked the trust of this company that has 12 thousand 94 rooms in 20 lodging establishments, distributed in six destinations in Mexico. He reiterated that the health conditions in the country allow us to return to our daily activities, and that the hotel industry is the backbone of tourism.

He also endorsed it in a meeting with the president of the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels, Juan José Fernández Carrillo, highlighting that in 2019, this sector represented 29.8% of the Tourism GDP and generated 9.7% of employment.

Torruco Marqués highlighted that in the first quarter of 2022, the average hotel occupancy in 70 monitored tourist centers was 50.6%, which represents 22.8 percentage points above what was registered in the same period of 2021.

The Tianguis Turístico continues with its productive work sessions that include more than 65,000 business appointments, an academic program made up of keynote lectures, and the commitment to inclusion to make tourism an authentic tool for social reconciliation.
