The flowery Rosedal
The magnificent Rose Garden locates in Palermo neighbourhood, with a collection of more than 18,000 roses and a lake that surrounds it.
The Palermo Rose Garden places inside the Park 3 de Febrero and occupies a space that belonged to the former Governor Juan Manuel de Rosas's ranch, until he was defeated in the Battle of Caseros, in 1852.
The person who started the work was the landscaper Carlos Thays, the same one who built the Botanical Garden, the Avellaneda Park and the Lezama Park, among others. Then his disciple Benito Carrasco finished the work in 1914.
Every July, when the pruning season begins, residents and tourists approach the gardeners to receive flowers or cuttings from which new species can be reproduced. In this way the rose bushes bloom healthy and strong in winter to reach the maximum point of development in October.
In 2012, the Palermo Rose Garden celebrated its centenary (1914-2014) and was recognized with the international "Garden Excellence Award". This prize is awarded annually by the World Federation of Rose Societies.
In the 3.4 hectares that it occupies, there is also a Greek bridge that crosses the lake, an amphitheater, an Andalusian patio and the Garden of Poets. In this last space, 26 busts commemorate famous people such as Alfonsina Storni, Dante Alighieri, William Shakespeare and Jorge Luis Borges, among others.
