The hotel sector in Brazil celebrates the recovery of employment

Demand exceeding 2019 levels, which arouses optimism among businessmen

The resumption of international tourism in Brazil has been consolidated in 2022, as evidenced by the numbers of foreigners, expenses and international air network.

Another segment that has felt this recovery is the hotel industry. The occupation of accommodation places grows every month, exceeding rates until 2019, which arouses optimism among businessmen in the industry, especially with the arrival of summer.

In the Northeast, for example, four out of five beds for tourists from the São Luís hotel chain were occupied in July of this year: the highest occupancy recorded since the beginning of the historical series, which began twenty years ago.

Goiânia and Vitória are other examples. In 2021, the two capitals were the cities that came closest to the 2019 revenue per available room (RevPar) rates, at 92%. RevPar is one of the main performance indicators in the hotel market that measures the efficiency of the establishment.

The number of new hotels under construction in Brazil also shows a promising horizon for the sector. According to the 16th edition of the “Panorama da Hotelaria Brasileira 2022” study, carried out by HotelInvest in partnership with the Forum of Hotel Operators of Brazil (FOHB), 124 hotels are under construction in 93 Brazilian cities, surpassing the mark of 18,000 new ones. bedrooms. Of this total, 38% of the hotels are in advanced construction and 62% in the beginning of development: R$ 5.3 billion will be invested until 2026.

“These are data that confirm the positive moment of national tourism, generating employment and income for those who work and live from tourism. For this reason, Embratur's international dissemination actions, which were intensified in the second half of the year, are fundamental for us to achieve even better results in the future”, says the president of Embratur, Silvio Nascimento.

The owner of the Villa Hotéis Group in Pirenópolis (GO), Geovani Ribeiro, says that he noticed the increase in demand for accommodation at the end of 2021. “We clearly see a recovery in tourism, with a very large investment in the hotel sector, restaurants , pubs. In general, everyone is investing in the structure to receive tourists because they realized that the enterprises that only had occupation on weekends started to have regular occupation”.

The president of the Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry of Goiás (ABIH-GO), Fernando Carlos Pereira, recalls that the market was heated in 2020, but the restrictions imposed by the pandemic had a direct impact on the sector. According to him, the emergency measures were essential for the rapid recovery that is felt in 2022.

“The National ABIH works very well at the Brazilian level, even in political circles, such as the Senate and the Federal Chamber. In the period of the pandemic, the institution had an exemplary performance, which reached the state ABIH. Each one with his experience defended the hotel segment in their respective regions”, highlights Fernando Carlos Pereira.
