The Ecuadorian capital reported an increase in the number of foreign tourists with an increase in sales and an increase in revenues linked to tourism activity
In this second quarter of 2022, the numbers show a progressive and sustained recovery of this productive sector in the Metropolitan District. To mention an example, 48 thousand 081 international non-resident visitors entered through the Mariscal Sucre Airport in August 2022, which means 75% more compared to the figure registered in August 2021. Even the number of international non-resident visitors from January to August of this year it reached 337 thousand 092, 128% more than in the same period of 2021.
With these figures, it is expected to exceed half a million visits to the capital by the end of this year and in 2023 the average values recorded prior to the pandemic could be reached.
Another indicator that shows the improvement in the tourism sector is that related to sales, which for this 2022 reported a recovery. In the period between January and June of this year, local sales stood at 856 million dollars, which means 34% more compared to the 641 million dollars registered in the same period of 2021.
According to figures from the SRI, the establishments that reported the most sales in the first half of this year are accommodation with 83%, followed by tourist transport with 59%, tour operators with 39% and food and beverage establishments with a increase in sales of 19.
The Hotel Occupancy Rate (TOH), an indicator that shows the arrival of guests at lodging establishments, also increased. Figures shared by the Quito Metropolitan Hotel Association - HQM, show that in August 2022 the TOH was 51% compared to 28% reported in the same month of 2021. Likewise, this indicator stood at 47% between January and August of 2022, compared to 20% registered in the same period of the previous year.
The work with the tourism industry is permanent, with a coordination of actions and constant accountability. This is how, in the last year, 5 meetings have been held with leaders of associations and unions in the sector, representatives of food and beverage establishments; hotels, hostels, inns, villas and lodges; tour operators, travel agencies and airlines; bars and discotheques; tourist transport and tourist guides of the Metropolitan District of Quito. In these meetings, which are held every 2 months, a series of actions have been coordinated and planned to continue in the process of strengthening the tourism sector.
In this way, Quito Tourism articulates the public and private sectors to strengthen the city as the ideal destination for vacations and for the development of events, congresses and meetings, thus achieving the reactivation of tourism and its productive chain.
