The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that the percentage of hotel occupancy for the period January-August 2022 shows a cumulative occupancy rate of 55.9% in 70 selected tourist destinations.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) indicated that this represents 18.7 percentage points more than the same period of the previous year, according to the Hotel Monitoring Results of the DataTur system.
He highlighted that in the beach centers, the occupancy level was 66.4%, which contrasts with the 44.8% registered in the same period of 2021, which means an increase of 21.6 percentage points.
Meanwhile, in city destinations, the percentage of occupancy registered 46.6%, which means an increase of 16.1 percentage points, in relation to the 30.5% registered from January to August 2021.
The highest occupancy was registered in the Integrally Planned Centers (CIP) with 72.7%, and with the lowest occupancy in the cities of the interior, with 41.3%.
Torruco Marqués stressed that in the first eight months of 2022, the tourist centers that stand out by occupation are: Playacar, 80%; Cabo San Lucas, 78.2%; Akumal, 78.2%; Cancun, 77.1%; and Puerto Vallarta, 74.1%.
He pointed out that, in the 70 centers monitored by DataTur, from January to August 2022, the arrival of tourists was 52.9 million; of which 38.8 million were national tourists, while 14.1 million were foreigners, this is 73.4% and 26.6%, respectively.
He added that the cities registered 28 million tourists to hotel rooms, while the beach centers received 24.9 million tourists to hotel rooms during January-August 2022.
The Secretary of Tourism reported that the average number of occupied rooms reached a level of 236 thousand 427 units, this is 51% more than the same period of the previous year.
For the beach centers, 131 thousand 700 average occupied rooms were registered, which means an increase of 48.8% compared to the January-August 2021 period when there were 88 thousand 516.
In city destinations, the number of occupied rooms was 104,727, which represents an increase of 53.8% compared to the same period in 2021, Torruco Marqués commented.
The Secretary of Tourism reiterated that these figures are proof that the recovery of the sector is a reality, since, according to expectations for the end of 2022, the average annual hotel occupancy is expected to be 56%, when last year it was 41.3%.
