Tourism Secretary Miguel Torruco Marqués inaugurated the pavilion at the British fair
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, heads the Mexican delegation that has a presence at the World Travel Market 2022 (WTM) that takes place from November 7 to 9 in London, United Kingdom.
Accompanied by the Mexican ambassador to the United Kingdom, Hon. Josefa González Blanco; the head of the Communication Department of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Marcelo Risi; as well as state authorities and representatives of the business sector; The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) inaugurated the Mexican pavilion at this tourism fair, one of the most important in the world and which contributes to the promotion of Mexico at an international level before the British and European markets.
When cutting the ribbon, Torruco Marqués highlighted that the recovery of tourism in Mexico is already a reality thanks to the successful policies of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, of not restricting international flights; apply the biosanitary protocols developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Sectur, as well as the close support of the private sector; the non-indebtedness that allowed applying the vaccination strategy; and not cancel the Tianguis Turístico by innovating with its digital version.
He indicated that this year, according to expectations, Mexico will receive 42 million 301 thousand international tourists, and highlighted that 26 thousand 121 million dollars will be captured in foreign currency from tourism, this is 6.3% more than what was registered in 2019.
He also participated in the inauguration of the Mexican Caribbean pavilion, where he accompanied the Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, Bernardo Cueto Riestra; the director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), Javier Aranda Pedrero; and the president of the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres, Jesús Almaguer Salazar.
During the first day of activities, the Secretary of Tourism held a meeting with Aeroméxico's regional sales director for Europe and Asia, Pascual Esperanza, and the Benelux country manager, Mark Mooren, who notified him that Mexico's flagship airline will increase its global network with a new route to Rome, Italy, from Mexico City starting March 25, 2023.
The airline's executives also reported on the resumption of service to Asia, through a daily flight to Tokyo, Japan, direct from Mexico City, in addition, as of March 27, it will increase frequencies to Madrid, Spain, from Monterrey and Guadalajara, first with five weekly flights and later with one daily flight.
Torruco Marqués celebrated the airline's decision for this increase in routes and frequencies to the main issuing markets of international tourists to Mexico.
With the purpose of strengthening the ties of cooperation with the main tour operators in Europe, the Secretary of Tourism had a meeting with directors of the TUI Group, headed by its CEO, Sebastian Ebel, with whom he discussed the opportunities for air connectivity between the United Kingdom , Europe and Mexico, and agreed on joint collaboration schemes to promote tourism to our country, from this region, as well as the new investment projects they have in Mexico.
Through a bilateral meeting, the head of Sectur met with Marcelo Risi, head of the Communication Department of the UNWTO, who, on behalf of the secretary general of this organization, Zurab Pololikashvilli, discussed the opportunities to promote tourist flows with Mexico.
Through an important dialogue, Torruco Marqués exposed the strategies carried out by the Government of Mexico during the pandemic, which allowed the prompt recovery of this industry.
The private sector plays a fundamental role in the sector, in this sense the secretary of Tourism met with Julia Simpson, CEO and president of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), who recognized the importance of this sector for the economy of our country and its relevance worldwide.
The Secretary of Tourism extended the invitation to the president of the WTTC to participate in the Tianguis Turístico México 2023, which will take place from March 26 to 29 in Mexico City; same that was accepted by Julia Simpson.
The WTM is also attended by the Undersecretary of Tourism, Humberto Hernández Haddad; the general director of promotion and international affairs, Emmanuel Rey; Mariana Herrera-Salcedo, Head of Economic Affairs at the Embassy of Mexico in the United Kingdom, among others.
