Surpassing destinations such as Singapore, Rio de Janeiro and Montreal, Cartagena was chosen as the third most desired city by international tourists, after obtaining the bronze award, after New Orleans (gold) and Tokyo (silver). ProColombia obtained fifth place as the best tourism agency.
The tourist reference of the Greater Colombian Caribbean was chosen by the readers of Wanderlust magazine during the awards gala that took place on November 8 in London, within the framework of the World Travel Market London (WTM), one of the fairs largest tourism in the world.
Between January and September 2022, 390,700 non-resident visitors have arrived in Cartagena, mainly from the United States, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, Panama, Canada and the Netherlands, according to records from Colombia Migration, with analysis from ProColombia. The total number of arrivals in this period represents a growth of 247% compared to the same months of the previous year, and a recovery of 97% compared to 2019, the year before the slowdown in the sector due to the pandemic.
Colombia has been a protagonist on different occasions in the global edition of the magazine, which has English-speaking readers all over the world, especially in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. In its most recent publication, Wanderlust dedicated a report to Bogotá, highlighting the hidden treasures of the country's capital, from the personal experience of George Kipourus, editor of Wanderlust Travel Media. In September 2021, a panoramic photo of Cartagena was on the cover of the magazine.
This recognition is added to the recent awards that Colombia has received in recent months, among which the 14 World Travel Awards South America stand out, in which Cartagena appeared in five categories, among them ´Leading Port of the region´, Leading Destination for honeymoons' and 'South America's leading hotel', with the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara.
