Airbus and Neste join forces to decarbonise the aerospace sector

They did it through the agreement that guarantees the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Airbus and Neste, a world leader in the production of renewable fuels, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly advance the production and adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Both parties share the vision that the SAF is a key solution to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air transport. This collaboration aims to accelerate the transition of the aviation sector towards the SAF.

Neste and Airbus acknowledge that one of the biggest challenges in accelerating the use of SAF is increasing its production. This collaboration is laying the groundwork for both Airbus and Neste to drive the development of SAFs across the global aviation industry. It will allow the partners to explore business opportunities together and jointly promote the production and use of sustainable aviation fuel. Priority will focus on SAF technical development, fuel approval and testing of current and future production technologies, as well as research into how the use of "100% SAF" can be achieved.

"SAF is one of the most promising decarbonization solutions in the aerospace industry that can be used in both in-service and future aircraft fleets. We are honored to partner with Neste to drive the development and adoption of SAF, with to stimulate the creation of a commercially viable market for renewable aviation fuels," says Julie Kitcher, Executive Vice President of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Airbus. "All Airbus aircraft are certified to fly with up to 50% SAF and this partnership will be instrumental in reaching the goal of up to 100% SAF before the end of the decade."

"Neste is at the forefront of accelerating the aviation industry's process towards a more sustainable future. That process requires the cooperation of the entire industry value chain. This collaboration with Airbus connects an aerospace industry pioneer with a leader in renewable fuels. The companies' combined knowledge and experience will help advance the use and availability of SAF as a means of transitioning aviation to more sustainable energy sources and reduce the climate impact of aviation," said Thorsten Lange, Executive Vice President of Renewable Aviation at Neste.

This is the second collaboration between Airbus and energy provider Neste after the exploration on SAF "Emission and Climate Impact of Alternative Fuels" (ECLIF3) with the German research center DLR. With this MoU, Airbus and Neste will continue to work on the technical aspects of the challenge to achieve 100% SAF certification.

The entire ecosystem is playing an essential role in ensuring greater acceptance of SAFs. In addition to working on technical aspects, Neste and Airbus will investigate specific SAF projects and business opportunities around the world with airlines and other stakeholders.
