Within the province of Chubut, Punta Tombo is home to close to a million Magellanic penguins. The Reserve is open to visitors and on average it is stipulated that it receives visits from 88,000 people annually. To get to this magnificent excursion from the city of Puerto Madryn, you must travel two and a half hours along the Patagonian routes. The visit lasts approximately 3 hours, it has an Interpretation Center, which invites tourists to delve into a journey towards the bottom of the sea to the surface and its coexistence with the local fauna. Then, they will be able to enjoy a path that has 3km (round trip), where they will visit different viewpoints and observe the penguins and their nests.
The visit to the national park can be made between September and April, which is when the penguins come to the coast to breed. During the winter months (from April to September) this species of bird remains offshore and that is why the Punta Tombo reserve is closed. In addition, they have the particularity of always returning to the same nest every year. The best time to visit the colony is in November, which is when the births and first care for the chicks take place. To maintain the habitat and a peaceful environment, tourists are required to be 2m from the animals and, in addition, the entry of food is prohibited.
