Marriott International reiterates its commitment to the environment

By 2025, 100% of the luxury chain's hotels will have sustainability certificates

Environmental and social responsibility in tourism has been a central axis for Marriott International in the Caribbean and Latin America for decades. This is reflected in the objectives that the hotel chain has set itself in the coming years for the protection of the environment. By 2025, 100% of hotels will have sustainability certificates, 650 properties will be recognized as green buildings, and 95% responsible sourcing of animal proteins, bottled water, cleaning products, paper, room amenities, and more will be achieved. textiles, among others.

In the same way, the hotel chain will reduce the use of water by 15%, and carbon dioxide emissions by 30%, to reach zero net emissions in 2050. While, by 2025, it will achieve a 45% reduction of general waste and 50% of food waste.

The company is committed to creating a positive and sustainable impact in all the places where it operates with Serve 360: “Doing Good in Every Direction”, based on the objectives of sustainability and social impact by 2025, as well as the objectives of sustainable development of the United Nations.

This commitment is reflected even in the food that Marriott offers at its properties, as the company aspires to source 100% of the eggs it serves guests from cage-free sources across all global operations for all owned, managed, and and franchisees by the end of 2025.

To commemorate Earth Day, Marriott International in the region highlights some actions of its properties that contribute to achieving the company's global objectives.

In Mexico and Colombia, collaborators and guests of the Sheraton Buganvilias Resort & Convention Center and the Santa Marta Marriott Resort Playa Dormida, collaborate with the cleaning of beaches in Puerto Vallarta (Mexico) and Playa Dormida (Colombia). The hotels will also join Earth Hour, a global movement in which more than 190 countries participate by turning off the lights of the most emblematic homes, businesses, buildings and monuments.

The Westin Reserva Conchal, an All-Inclusive Golf Resort & Spa, Costa Rica, in partnership with Reserva Conchal and Blue Zones Nicoya, established an apiary in order to protect the bees that produce the honey used in the restaurants of the hotels, and that pollinates approximately 3 thousand hectares of forest, contributing to the conservation of the reserve's ecosystems. In addition, the hotel is located next to the Conchal Reserve and has the Najui Garden, where organic vegetables are harvested for consumption at the hotel.

To celebrate Earth Day, The Westin Puntacana Resort & Club located on a white sand beach in the Caribbean Sea of ​​the Dominican Republic, offers guests the Sustainable Agriculture Tour by the Grupo Puntacana Foundation, which includes a visit to the orchard and visit their apiary, where they produce the award-winning Puntacana Forest Honey. Also, guests can participate in projects of the Marine Innovation Center, where they carry out activities for the conservation of sea turtles and corals.

In the south of the continent, the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center, Argentina, was recognized by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, with the Green Seal certification, which evaluates and rewards successful practices in dry waste management in 2022 , while the following year the property was awarded the bronze category of the Greenest Hotels certification. The property has vertical gardens, which help purify the air and reduce the ambient temperature. The hotel has structures powered by solar panels, offering the possibility of charging mobile phones with renewable energy.

At the JW Marriott Hotel São Paulo, in Brazil, 98% of the hotel's irrigation water, used for maintenance and cleaning of administrative areas, comes from the reuse system. This represents a 30% reduction in the volume of rainwater discharged into the public system. While, the water heating system is made up of 86 solar panels and the elevators with regenerative brake reduce energy use by 12%.

Although Earth Day is commemorated every April 22, these and other activities are promoted by Marriott International in the Caribbean and Latin America throughout the year to protect, restore, and improve the ecosystems where it maintains a presence.
