Within the framework of World Environment Day, Avianca announced that it was recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project as one of the best airlines in Latin America for its management against climate change. On this occasion, the airline obtained a “B” rating, one of the highest scores awarded by the international organization. This result is due to a rigorous evaluation of the airline's actions against climate change, around issues of: governance, risk and opportunities, business strategy, objectives and behavior, methodology and data on emissions, energy, biodiversity, carbon pricing, among other items.

In addition, Avianca announced today that it once again received its certification under the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System for its administrative buildings in Bogotá and maintenance of aircraft and ground support equipment in Medellín, Ecuador and El Salvador.

Despite the fact that the aviation industry represents an impact of only 3% of global emissions, Avianca, as well as the airline industry as a whole, takes actions for the environment and seeks to improve the results of its operations. Among the initiatives carried out by the company, its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint through investment in new technologies, infrastructure and efficient operations stand out, as well as the implementation of strategies to offset emissions. In 2022 alone, the compensation was 735,000 tons of CO2, corresponding to 90% of the emissions generated by its domestic operation in Colombia. Added to this is its alliance with CHOOOSE, a platform that has allowed both Avianca clients and collaborators to directly compensate the footprint of their flights.

Likewise, thanks to the implementation of the software equipped with Fuel Efficiency technology (efficient use of fuel), the airline avoided the emission of 59,549 tons of CO2, added to the increase in the capacity of more than 90 aircraft of the A320 fleet with the project of reconfiguration, which brought with it a 15.35% reduction in CO2 emissions for each passenger transported.

On the other hand, through the use of solar energy in the Rionegro maintenance hangars, 29% of the total energy was supplied in 2022. And if we talk about waste treatment, this same year, the recycling of 465 was achieved. tons of non-hazardous waste generated in the operation, which was used by trade recyclers, dignifying their work.

“At Avianca we are aware that sustainability is TODAY. We have the challenge of reducing our environmental impact, without affecting the costs of our operation and the access to our service in a region where flying is not a luxury but a necessity. We have reduced emissions per passenger, executed robust compensation and efficiency strategies in the use of fuel, added state-of-the-art technology, precisely to be recognized as one of the airlines in Latin America with the best rating of the Carbon Disclosure Project. All this while we expand access to our service for more and more travelers,” said Felipe Andrés Gómez, Avianca's director of institutional relations and sustainability.

With these actions focused on climate change mitigation, added to those related to the social development of the regions in which it operates, Avianca reaffirms its commitment to being a sustainable airline that, under its sustainability platform TODAY, has a model of efficient business that responds to market challenges, and at the same time contributes to the well-being of ecosystems and communities through the implementation of good and best practices in its daily operations.
