The invisible technical challenges of being a travel blogger are causing about one in three creators to think about quitting, with more than half experiencing burnout, show research results from Travelpayouts, the leading travel partnership platform that connects 300,000+ travel content creators with 100+ leading travel brands.
To better understand blogger sentiment, Travelpayouts conducted a survey of approximately 1,000 bloggers - not including its own partners - using the SurveyMonkey Audience consumer panel.
In the words of a travel blogger participating in the survey, "It's a job that never ends. Balancing my activities and responsibilities in real life has become a constant challenge," while others spoke of the "loneliness" of the race.
Other survey results from Travelpayouts - which works with major travel brands including Booking.com, Hilton, OYO, Expedia and Get Your Guide, and paid more than $13 million in commissions last year - include that travel content creators feel:
Discouraged when compared to successful bloggers, as reported by nearly half of respondents (48%). This demonstrates the impact of comparison and doubt on motivation and trust.
They suffer from social media overload: 40% of participants have difficulty managing multiple platforms. This highlights the difficulty of maintaining an active Internet presence alongside other responsibilities.
They have limited knowledge of blog development, design, and monetization: 28% noted this issue, highlighting the need for better knowledge and resources in these areas. Addressing this issue can help travel bloggers optimize their platforms and maximize their earning potential in the competitive blogging industry.
That solving technical difficulties related to their website is the task they would most like to never have to do again, with 51% choosing this option and 35% following with manual integration of affiliate links.
"Everyone thinks that the life of a travel blogger is an absolute dream. Partying in Cancun or Monaco one day, on a savannah safari with elephants the next, and always in a private jet with the presidential suite in the best hotels, right? But don't believe everything you see on social media: our survey results show that the life of a blogger is stressful, no matter how glamorous their content is: "blogging anxiety." That's when bloggers feel exhausted by the challenges they face beyond content creation. We recognize the seriousness of this issue and strive to address it to help our creators achieve their goals without harming their health," explains Ivan Baidin, Director Travelpayouts General.
To overcome these challenges, Baidin recommends bloggers delegate technical responsibilities to professional third-party companies.
To help bloggers overcome these challenges, Travelpayouts will host an event called "Blogxiety rereat" to be held online on July 27. Click here to sign up.
