Alaska Airlines is expanding into Latin America with the addition of year-round daily service between Los Angeles and Guatemala City , Guatemala , an entirely new destination. It has also added new flights from San Diego and Chicago O'Hare to Ixtapa - Zihuatanejo , a popular tourist destination along Mexico's Pacific coast , as seasonal leisure routes for winter travel increase. Flights are available to purchase now at alaskaair.com for service beginning in December.
These new flights build on the strength of the airline's network in Latin America. From its hub in Los Angeles, Alaska has the most flights to the most destinations in Latin America of any airline, including up to 18 daily nonstop flights this winter to 12 cities across the region.
"As the fifth largest airline in the US, we are a growing airline that is expanding to more international destinations. Guatemala is a new and dynamic country for us and our guests, full of outdoor adventures, history and beauty. Our new service will enable families, friends and businesses to better connect between the West Coast and Central America," said Kirsten Amrine, Alaska Airlines Vice President of Revenue Management and Network Planning.
"We have been flying to Mexico for 35 years. It is a favorite of many of our guests for its culture, cuisine and beaches. Our new Saturday nonstop to Zihuatanejo from San Diego and Chicago are in addition to our existing service from Los Angeles and San Francisco and provide guests with more options as they plan their winter getaways."
Guatemala City is full of history and architecture. Outside the capital, there is much to explore. The town of Antigua features Baroque-style buildings, farm-to-table restaurants, and an art and textile show. Formed inside a huge volcanic crater, Lake Atitlán is a popular destination with its azure waters, stunning hillsides, and quaint villages that surround the lake. For adventure seekers, Guatemala is a nation of volcanoes with several that are accessible for hiking and exploring.
“We are very excited to welcome the inaugural flight of Alaska Airlines to our country this December,” said Francis Argueta, General Director of Civil Aeronautics of Guatemala. “Guatemala has a lot to offer with its gastronomy, its nature and the beautiful corners of the Mayan world, which will be a treasure of experiences for travelers”.
With the new service to Guatemala City, Alaska increases international destinations. It offers flights from LAX and SEA to neighboring Belize, and serves the airports of San José and Liberia in Costa Rica. This December, the company will fly from its West Coast gateways to Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, Guatemala and the Bahamas.
It will have four peak-day nonstop trips to Mexico from San Diego when new service to Zihuatanejo begins, giving its Southern California travelers even more options when deciding where to kick back and relax. The weekly flight between Chicago O'Hare and Zihuatanejo is in association with ALG Vacations.
They also add new 737-9 aircraft to their fleet every month, allowing them to fly longer distances with their longer range. New non-stop destinations are now possible that were not just a few years ago.
