If you are looking for authentic experiences and to feel that local vibe, you should add to your trip to the Happy Island a visit to the historic neighborhood of Rancho, just outside of downtown Oranjestad. What was a fishing village in the mid-1800s and then the neighborhood of a small refinery, is today a historic neighborhood with an eclectic collection of bars, cafes and restaurants and a lively nightlife scene.

For coffee lovers there is Flor de Oriente, a Dutch-style coffee located in the oldest bar in Aruba. Attention to historical detail left much of the original building dating back to 1935 intact, with a fascinating collection of antiques decorating nearly every corner inside. Outdoors, guests can relax under the bistro's bright lights, enjoying the area's colorful cityscapes.

In 2021, live music began to hit the air with Hard Grooves Jazz Café. Here you will find some of the best musicians on the island, as well as guest artists. The cafe, which is owned and operated by local jazz musician Erik Eman, offers music events and jam sessions paired with craft cocktails, a selection of local and craft beers, wine, and a light menu of typical Dutch sandwiches and snacks.

Two new offerings recently joined this up-and-coming district: Nusa Indonesian Restaurant, a beautiful outdoor Balinese garden experience offering a traditional rice table experience as well as classic Indonesian favorites like sate and rendang; and Beer Garden Aruba, boasting vintage charm and a cool bohemian beach house vibe. The interior surroundings pay homage to its 100+ year history (it is one of the oldest standing houses in Oranjestad). One side of the house serves as a beer tasting room, while the other side is intended for private events and groups.

The original rock walls were opened up in several areas, offering a window into Aruba's past architecture. The outdoor garden offers several spaces to relax or to wander up to the bar and strike up a conversation with the friendly and knowledgeable bartenders.

Keep an eye out for this historic neighborhood as ongoing conservation efforts will reveal more dining and nightlife options to look forward to.
