The Ministry of Tourism socialized through a virtual event the “Hotel Sustainability Basics” program, a certification granted by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), which can be accessed by accommodation establishments in the country that demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. 125 participants from various accommodations nationwide attended the event.

The fundamental actions that accommodations must comply with include:

Efficiency: robust approaches to measure and reduce energy and water consumption, waste and carbon emissions (four actions).

Planet: fundamental actions to protect the environment (six actions).

People: fundamental actions towards a positive contribution to the communities in which they are located (two actions).

Eight of the actions must initially be accomplished within the first year, while the others can be committed and established within 3 years.

To access the validation of the implementation of the program, interested establishments must register on the WTTC website where they will obtain information on the certification packages to which they can apply, according to their needs.

During the three-year duration of the certification program, different criteria will be reviewed and the sustainability indices of the participating establishments will be improved.

The National Government promotes activities that improve sustainability for tourism in the country and that contribute positively in the economic, social and environmental spheres.
