Thanks to its high levels of perception of safety, recovery in the economy after the pandemic and increase in hotel occupancy, Puerto Vallarta remains on the list as one of the most competitive cities among relatively smaller cities in the country, according to the most recent 2023 Urban Competitiveness Index (ICU) study carried out by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO).

In this edition of the ICU, 69 indicators were taken, grouped into 10 subindexes that evaluate 66 cities, where more than 62% of Mexicans live, classifying urban areas into six levels of competitiveness: very high, high, medium-high, medium-low, low and very low.

The study indicates that, in the group of relatively small cities, with 250 to 500 thousand inhabitants, the green pearl of the Mexican Pacific obtained a “high competitiveness” in the subindexes of Stable Economy and International Openness, the latter standing out for its investment areas. direct foreign arrival, flow of passengers from or to abroad, 4 and 5 star hotel supply, as well as hotel occupancy.

Among the measurements of progress recorded, the organization also mentions that in Mexico the effect of the recovery of the economy, after the pandemic, the average flow of air passengers increased almost 30%, going from 698 to 904 passengers per thousand inhabitants, for its part, hotel occupancy had an increase from 38.2% to 50.3%.

Puerto Vallarta continues to remain one of the booming sun and beach tourist destinations in the Mexican Republic, thanks to its privileged geographical position, wide gastronomic offer, entertainment and experiences, which have allowed it to register increasing numbers throughout the year. in terms of passenger movement by sea and air, making it one of the favorites for national and international travelers.
