The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, reported that the population employed in the tourism sector in Mexico amounted to 4 million 764 thousand employed people in the third quarter of 2023.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) indicated that in the period July-September 2023, tourism employment represented 9% of national employment.
He highlighted that the recovery in tourism employment continues by showing, from July to September 2023, a growth of 1.1%, which is equivalent to 51,231 more people employed, compared to the 4,713,000 people employed in the previous quarter. .
Torruco Marqués pointed out that in its annual comparison, an increase of 211,921 more people employed in the sector producing tourism goods and services was observed, which represents a growth of 4.7% compared to the third quarter of 2022.
He stressed that tourism employment in the third quarter of 2023 exceeded by 6.2%, that is, 276,669 people, the historical figure recorded for personnel employed in the tourism sector in the first quarter of 2020, prior to the pandemic, when 4 million were registered. 487 thousand people employed.
The calculation of Tourism Employment as of the third quarter of 2023 was carried out based on the National Occupation and Employment Survey (New edition) (ENOEN) of the INEGI and the methodology approved by the Specialized Technical Committee of Economic Statistics of the Tourism Sector (CTEEEST), made up of INEGI, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (STPS), the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and Sectur.
By highlighting the constant growth of employment in Mexico's tourism sector, the head of Sectur highlighted the importance of private initiative, made up of micro, small and medium-sized companies, to large corporations, as generators of tourist products and services, thanks to the close collaboration with the three levels of government, and thus generate more sources of jobs for people in the tourism sector.
In this way, the economic impact is also promoted in the 270 tourist-oriented places in our country, which benefits the local population, in compliance with the instruction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to make tourism a tool of social reconciliation.
