A traditional (and extremely tasty) Brazilian cut of meat that is practically part of the country's cultural and gastronomic identity is among the best in the world. The Brazilian “Picanha” was recently elected the Best Dish in the World at the TasteAtlas Awards 23/24. Known in the UK as “rump cap”, this traditional Brazilian BBQ cut scored 4.75 stars, getting the top spot among the most highly-rated 100 dishes based on 271,819 dish ratings.

The famous cut is taken from the cow’s rump, where it sits on a fat cap, although the meat itself is quite lean. Very popular in Brazil, it is especially used for “Churrascos” (Brazilian barbecue) and is also broadly found in “Churrascarias”, an all-you-can-eat BBQ restaurant where you can try as much meat and food as you want for a set price.

“It’s good to see Brazilian gastronomy gaining ground around the world through our traditional dishes. This is a sign that foreign tourists value our ingredients, our techniques and ways of making things”, said Ana Paula Jacques, Culture and Gastronomy coordinator at the Brazilian Tourism Board (Embratur).

And it is not only on the TasteAtlas that Brazilian cuisine has been receiving praise. According to a research by travel insurance company InsureandGo, which established a ranking of the best foods in the world based on the most viewed food videos on TikTok, the Brazilian “Churrasco” comes in third place with 8.3 billion views, after the USA’s hot dog in second place (10.2 billion views), and Japan’s ramen as number 1 with over 16 billion views.

The study compiled over 2,600 delicacies from 177 countries, and then analysed the number of views on each delicacy’s hashtag on the Chinese social media platform, revealing “every country’s must-try local delicacy”.

Where to eat

Barbecue is a Brazilian phenomenon. Therefore, the famous “churrascarias” (Brazilian steakhouses) can be found in every corner of the country. Although the experience traditionally comes from the South of Brazil, visitors can consume authentic Brazilian barbecue no matter their city of choice.
