The Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region will host the annual Green Destinations congress. For three days - October 16, 17 and 18, 2024 - the southernmost region of our country will be the epicenter of sustainability, as it will host the most important event in the field of sustainability in the world on its lands.

Green Destinations is a global nonprofit organization that supports sustainable destinations, their businesses and their communities. Through its conferences, it fosters connections between industry stakeholders in incredible environments, while participants discover solutions and best practices for effectively managing tourism destinations.

The national director of Sernatur, Cristóbal Benítez, expressed his satisfaction with the awarding of this important event for Chile. “We value hosting this great global tourism sustainability event, since it is the first time it will be held outside of Europe. Therefore, it represents a great challenge for us, as a country, to continue delving into sustainability issues, how we work at a territorial level, how we all coordinate to have tourism that is increasingly sustainable and coherent with the needs of each of us. the territories,” said the authority.

The event brings together speakers from all corners of the world, who share their experience and contribute to a wealth of knowledge that will shape the future of sustainable tourism in the world. In the last edition in Estonia, the event received nearly 300 delegates from the five continents, which allowed the country to be placed at the center of the most advanced discussions on tourism sustainability.

Felipe Vera, who is vice president of Green Destinations, said he was “very happy to be able to share very good news for human talent and the tourism value chain in our country, since Chile has been selected as host of the sustainable tourism event.” most important in the world. We believe that there is a diversity of good practices in the regions of the world and, as a way to promote that message, Chile and Magallanes are the ideal setting to showcase the tourism sustainability efforts of the Americas. Furthermore, the natural and cultural diversity of Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctic is recognized throughout the world and what better way to celebrate tourism sustainability from that destination.”

Magallanes, world headquarters of sustainability in 2024
The Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region has great attributes that made it awarded the headquarters of this world summit. The region's destinations are shown to the world as sustainable, responsible and attractive places for visitors, from the point of view of the experience they provide.

It was for these reasons that the Green Destinations organization itself has also highlighted the work of some regional destinations in recent years: Cape Horn in 2017 and Puerto Natales in 2020.

The regional director of Sernatur, Víctor Román, took advantage of the opportunity to “thank everyone who has made this dream possible of having for the first time an event as important as the global Green Destinations event in the Magallanes Region. Thanks to the trust of the Regional Government, to the Sernatur Magallanes team, which was working hard together with Green Destinations and the national management of Sernatur, to make this candidacy possible and, of course, this favorable result, so that Magallanes becomes the 2024 host of this important event.”

In this way, organizing and supporting the event will provide the Magallanes Region and the Chilean Antarctic with unique opportunities for global exposure to the community of those who have been part of the lists of 100 destinations highlighted by Green Destinations. Being an event that encourages the creation of networks and the transfer of methodologies, the human talent of the territories that host it benefit from receiving practical information on continuous improvement processes, as well as the opportunities to show the benefits of the destination before and after the event.
