Mexico: 21 million international tourists arrived by air according to their nationality in 2023

The Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, reported that this represents an increase of 6.2% compared to 2022 and 14.9% more compared to 2019

Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that, at the end of 2023, the arrival of 21 million 870 thousand international tourists by air to Mexico according to their nationality was recorded, which represents an increase of 6.2% compared to 2022 and also exceeding the arrivals of 2019 with 14.9%, when 19 million 39 thousand tourists were registered.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) indicated that according to information from the Migration Policy Unit-Registration and Identity of Persons of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), the main countries in arrivals of international tourists by air to Mexico in 2023 were: United States, Canada and Colombia with 16 million 728 thousand tourists, this is 7.1% more compared to 2022; Also exceeding the tourists of 2019 by 24.6%, when 13 million 424 thousand international tourists arrived.

He highlighted that, in 2023, the arrival of Americans by air reached 13 million 524 thousand tourists, exceeding the 2022 figure of 13 million one thousand tourists by 4% and also exceeding the 10 million 511 thousand tourists registered in 2019 by 28.7%.

He added that the arrival of Canadian tourists during 2023 was 2 million 468 thousand tourists, 40.3% higher than 2022, when there were 1 million 759 thousand tourists; Also exceeding, by 6.9%, the 2 million 310 thousand tourists attracted in 2019.

In 2023, the arrival of Colombian tourists by air was 735,175 tourists, exceeding the arrivals of 2019 when 602,832 tourists arrived.

Of the rest of the nationalities, 5 million 142 thousand tourists were counted, this being an increase of 3.4% compared to 2022 and representing a market share of 23.5%.

Torruco Marqués pointed out that, in 2023, the airports of Cancún, the Mexico City International Airport ( AICM) and Los Cabos, were the ones that received the largest number of international tourists with the arrival of 16 million 628 thousand tourists, which It meant 4.8% more than 2022 and, also exceeding 14 million 671 thousand tourists in 2019, representing an increase of 13.3% more.

He explained that, during 2023, 10 million 42 thousand international tourists arrived at the Cancun airport, an increase of 5.8% compared to 2022; 4 million 280 thousand tourists arrived at the AICM, 1.8% more compared to 2022; and the Los Cabos airport received 2 million 307 thousand international tourists, this is 6.2% more than what was observed during 2022.

5 million 241 thousand tourists arrived from the rest of the airports with international operations, an 11% higher level compared to 2022 with a market share of 24%.

The Secretary of Tourism emphasized that the arrival of international tourists by air from the main source markets is part of the result of the correct policy of the current administration, which translates into more foreign exchange earnings, per capita spending and economic benefits for the benefit of the local population, in compliance with the instruction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to make tourism a tool of social reconciliation.
