Tourism demand throughout America is on the rise

Data obtained by Amadeus and UN Tourism show strong growth, especially in the Caribbean and Central America

Demand for travel to destinations across the Americas is on the rise, a new report published today by Amadeus in collaboration with UN Tourism shows.

"Travel Insights 2024: Focus on the Americas, May to August 2024," is the second in a series of reports that offer information on global tourism focusing on the Americas and its subregions, North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean.

UN Tourism data shows that some 1.3 billion international tourists were registered worldwide in 2023, a 34% increase on 2022 volumes, and forward-looking data for 2024 suggests demand will remain strong. . International tourist arrivals to America in 2023
reached 90% of pre-pandemic levels.

Looking ahead, Amadeus data shows that travel searches between May and August 2024 1 have increased by 132% compared to the same search period in 2023. Air travel indicators for the same search period show that Airlines are responding to this growing travel demand, as air capacity increased in May-August by up to 111%, compared to 2023 capacity volumes.

Growth continues in the Americas
Travel volumes remain strong, with the United States, United Kingdom and Brazil the main markets seeking travel to the Americas during the period May to August 2024. North America has the largest share of total searches among subregions of America for the search period, with the three main destinations
searched by travelers from around the world: New York, Toronto and Los Angeles.

The average hotel occupancy in America remains at the same level as in 2023 for the period from May to August. However, occupancy numbers are expected to grow as peak travel seasons approach due to increased last-minute bookings.

The report highlights several outlooks for the subregions for the search period from May to August 2024, including:
- North America – for North America, the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil are the main markets for travel search to this region. However, we are seeing growth in air searches from China and Japan to travel to North America.

- Central America – The United States is the main market seeking trips to Central America (followed by Canada and the United Kingdom). Costa Rica continues to be the most sought after destination in the subregion.

- South America – Argentina and Brazil also increase in popularity as destinations compared to 2023, according to searches. Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo and Santiago are the three most sought after destinations by American travelers looking for trips.

- Caribbean – The United States, Argentina and France are the main markets seeking trips to the Caribbean, with Punta Cana being the most sought after destination.
