Uruguay will host the UN Tourism office of the “Tourism Law Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean”

The Tourism Law Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean was created jointly by UN Tourism and the Inter-American Development Bank, it is a pioneering digital tool that allows, in a continuous and systematic manner, to collect, analyze, update and disseminate tourism regulations, both current and one that is in the process of development in the region of the Americas, with the support of a network of academic collaborators and experts in Tourism Law.

The Minister of Tourism, Eduardo Sanguinetti, together with the Director General of the Secretariat, Ignacio Curbelo, have carried out intense work in the area of ​​Tourism Law, with Uruguay being one of the first countries to adhere to the International Tourist Protection Code (ICPT). , subsequently proceeding to disseminate it in various places around the world.

In this administration, the Legal Observatory of Tourism was created, with the objective of having an adequate and updated regulatory framework to the changing reality of the tourism sector, its increasingly complex legal relationships, the necessary academic research exchange between the Ministry of Tourism with the most qualified technicians in the legal area of ​​the sector, is headed by the Director General of the Secretariat, Ignacio Curbelo and in which the expert in tourism law, recently appointed member of the ethics committee by Uruguay at UN Tourism, also participated, July Facal.

Minister Eduardo Sanguinetti, who had already been working on these legal issues during the administration of former Minister Tabaré Viera, highlighted that this resolution positions Uruguay at a global level, leading legal aspects in tourism matters. It also commits us to continue working together with UN Tourism to continue adding other countries as well as the international academic sector.

Uruguay has actively participated in different opportunities to support the CIPT, such as in the 35th joint meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the UN Tourism Commission for South Asia, held in June 2023 in Cambodia, as well as at the Colloquium on the International Code for the Protection of Tourists held at La Sorbonne University, Paris in October 2022, and the first International Tourism Law Seminar of the World Tourism Organization held at the University of Salamanca in 2023, which has allowed Uruguay to be named a "Code Champion" country.

It constitutes one of the emblematic initiatives of the Organization for the biennium 2024 -2025, adopted by the General Assembly of UN Tourism, at its 25th meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, through resolution 757.

Given the decision to be chosen as headquarters, which will be ratified from June 10 to 12 at the UN Tourism Executive Council that will take place in Barcelona, ​​Uruguay undertakes to fully comply with the legal and operational framework for the establishment of the Regional and Thematic Offices of UN Tourism.
