Colombia, in the sights of European travelers

The European tourism market is characterized by its preferences towards nature, adventure, archeology and culture and therefore, experiences that mix these types of activities in their trips are what they demand. In this way, Colombia being a place with a strong offer of these segments has become a destination of great interest for travelers from the old continent. 

The figures show a path of growth in recent years. Last year, 648,384 Europeans arrived in the country, which was 23% more than in 2022. During the first quarter of 2024, 186,595 have entered, which is equivalent to 13% more than in the same period of 2023.

And compared to The main countries of nationality of Europeans who entered the national territory for tourism, events and/or business reasons, throughout the first quarter of 2024, were Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy.

“They are travelers who value the origins of cultures and are interested in immersing themselves in local traditions, interacting with the population, learning about the history and natural wealth of the place they visit, on trips of approximately 20 days. So based on their knowledge, Travel Agencies have strengthened their offer towards destinations where they can find their preferences,” explained Paula Cortés Calle, executive president of ANATO. 

Some of the destinations that they include in their tourist offer and that have had an important reception among travelers are:

San Agustín and Tierradentro, where the largest number of megalithic monuments in the region are concentrated, it is one of the most requested places by tourists. Europeans to experience archeology in all its splendor, surrounded by mountains, plains, canyons, as well as abysses of great landscape. 

Barichara (Santander) is also a destination of great interest in the European market, it is a Heritage Town and one of the most beautiful cities that Colombia has, thanks to its colonial architecture, its cobbled streets, viewpoints, artisans and its sculptures carved in stone. . 

The Chingaza National Natural Park (Cundinamarca and Meta) is also a favorite destination for visitors from Europe, an ideal space for hiking on mountains full of secrets of Muiscas and Guayupes, while appreciating its richness of flora and fauna. 

Likewise, Ciudad Perdida (Magdalena), the main urban center of the ancient Tayrona civilization, an archaeological site of high importance for the research of that culture, an ideal place to discover natural magic, go hiking, experience a cultural immersion, purify the mind. and be fascinated by bird watching. 

“There are countless alternatives in Colombia that adapt to the preferences of European travelers. It is important that as a sector we actively promote our destinations internationally and recognize the potential that this market has for our development and growth,” stated the union leader.
