The 2024 edition of IMEX Frankfurt marked a notable increase in business confidence and certainty in the global events industry. Growth in exhibitor markets and thousands of buyers generating a steady, long-term flow of RFPs pointed to an industry once again thriving on solid foundations.
IMEX Frankfurt, which took place from May 14 to 16, welcomed 12,000 event professionals through the doors of Messe Frankfurt, of which more than 4,000 were buyers. More than 60,000 meetings were pre-booked and thousands more were held on the show floor.
Chairman Ray Bloom said: “I am delighted to see the return of the Asian market. I have heard that one of our exhibitors, Japan, which had its largest representation to date, has used the show to communicate the business preparedness of the areas affected by the recent earthquake.” He also noted that Africa is experiencing growth and maturity within the sector and Uganda stated that tourism, including business events, has officially overtaken coffee as its dominant market.
The next generation: hot topic
Encouraging the next generation of event organizers entering the sector was the focus of many conversations at the show, explained IMEX CEO Carina Bauer. During the fair, ICCA announced a new partnership with universities to provide scholarships, mentoring and networking opportunities for students and young event organizers. Carina added: “We are very pleased with the number of young people attending our Rising Talent program for those with up to three years of experience. “It was also fantastic to see the launch of a complementary programme, Young Stars, which forms part of our wider range of German language education and an integral part of the successful MICE Impact Academy.” In addition, the IMEX-MPI-MCI Future Leaders Forum turned 22 years old.
Carina also explained that many senior leaders had highlighted the variety of content on offer this year, and several appreciated having the time and space to delve into important topics in the workplace, such as burnout and mental health. Likewise, at the planner level, there was a positive response to the sessions that addressed topics in a very practical way, such as sustainability and especially AI (Artificial Intelligence). "It's clear that this combination of strategic leadership and practicality sessions gives everyone the options they want and the customization they need," she said.
He also explained that Monday's specialized education programs received widespread credit, and many participants appreciated the new program design that offered more time for business conversations and networking.
