Chile has consolidated its position as a leader in green tourism and adventure and romantic experiences, by obtaining important recognitions at the World Travel Awards, considered the 'Oscars of tourism'. These awards consolidate the country's position as a paradise for lovers of outdoor activities in South America.

In the continental edition of the awards, the country won the distinction of Best Green Destination, which recognizes the existence and promotion of nature destinations and the planning, development and promotion of responsible and environmentally sustainable tourism experiences. Chile surpassed Colombia in this category, which took home this award in 2023.

Verónica Pardo, Undersecretary of Tourism, highlighted that “these awards are a recognition of our commitment to sustainability and the promotion of unique tourist experiences. Chile has established itself as a leader in adventure tourism, thanks to our diversity of landscapes and activities that range from sandboarding in some of the country's dunes to trekking in Patagonia, passing through the beautiful landscapes of the Atacama Desert. In addition, the recognitions of Best Green Destination and Best Destination for Young People reflect our effort to offer responsible and vibrant options for all types of travelers. We will continue working to maintain and improve these standards, ensuring that Chile remains a leading destination.”

At a global level, our country holds the recognition of Best Green Destination after receiving it in 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023, for the value of the initiatives it has promoted to discover, enjoy and appreciate the ecological, aesthetic and ethical aspects of green forms of tourism.

In this regard, the national director of Sernatur, Cristóbal Benítez, explained that “the Continental Green Destination award reinforces the work we do at the institution and our commitment to responsible tourism practices. One of our lines of work is to support and encourage the certification of companies with the S Seal, a distinction that guarantees tourists that the different tourist services in Chile meet global sustainability criteria. We will continue working so that the country continues to lead the region and the world in this area of tourism.”

More recognition for Chile at the World Travel Awards in South America
Chile also won the award for Best Adventure Destination for the tenth consecutive year, an award that consolidates the country’s position as a paradise for lovers of outdoor activities. From sandboarding in the dunes of the north to trekking in Patagonia, Chile offers an incomparable variety of experiences that challenge and excite the most intrepid travelers.

In addition, Chile continues to enamor the continent and maintained the award for Most Romantic Destination in South America for the seventh time. The Atacama Desert—which covers the territory between the regions of Arica and Parinacota and Coquimbo—is known for its lunar landscapes and starry skies. The award it has won since 2018 highlights the magic and unique charm of this place, perfect for romantic getaways and unforgettable experiences under the stars.

Other unprecedented awards included Best Destination for Young People, reflecting the vibrant nightlife, urban culture and diverse activities that the country offers for young travelers; and Best City, for Santiago, in which the capital stood out for its cultural, gastronomic and entertainment offerings, as well as its vibrant atmosphere and strategic location, which is a starting point for exploring the rest of the country.

What's next for Chile at the World Travel Awards?
After the Grand Tour of the World Travel Awards, which are regional gala ceremonies that recognize excellence within each continent, the winners compete for the world awards.

There will again be a popular voting process to choose the winners, who will be awarded at a ceremony to be held in the city of Madeira, Portugal, on November 24, 2024.
