Cruises for everyone: tailor-made experiences at sea

The low season, which runs from May to November in the Northern Hemisphere and from September to May in the Southern Hemisphere, offers more affordable prices and a quieter experience due to fewer passengers

In recent years, cruises have become more popular, becoming an accessible alternative for travelers of all styles and budgets, with prices ranging, for example, from USD 580 per person, to take a cruise through the Bahamas, leaving from Miami in January 2025. This democratization of tourism at sea has been driven by a wide range of itineraries, activities and services on board that make it possible to find the perfect cruise for every type of traveler.

Modern cruises offer a variety of experiences to suit different types of interests. From lovers of relaxation and comfort, to adventurers looking to explore remote corners of the planet, to families, romantics, foodies and groups of friends, everyone can find an option that suits their preferences.

According to the COCHA Insights study, there is a significant increase in demand from Chilean passengers, where the influx of these can be up to 200% higher compared to the low season, for example, for those who want to take cruises between May and September of each year, especially routes around Europe.

Similarly, between December and March of each year, demand for cruise reservations increases in the Caribbean and also in South America, with departures from Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Santos and the port of San Antonio. On domestic routes, for example, the high season for sailing on the ancient glaciers near Skorpios is between December and February.

“Following the pandemic, enquiries about cruises have increased, indicating a renewed interest in this type of travel. Cruise lines are adapting to the new demands and expectations of travellers, offering more personalised experiences and a greater variety of services on board,” said COCHA’s Brand and PR manager, Daiana Mediña.

When looking for the ideal trip, there are low-season Caribbean cruises, in an inside cabin, for rates starting at USD 1,290 per person, including accommodation, taxes, meals, internet access and a seven-night alcoholic and soft drink package.

To sail around the Bahamas from Miami, for three nights, departing on January 31, 2025, in a double cabin, with an alcohol package, standard Wi-Fi access and travel assistance during the days of sailing, fares start from USD 580 per person.

If your goal is to take a trip around the Mediterranean, there are options during the low season for seven nights in an inside cabin, from USD 1,590 per person, including accommodation, taxes, drinks package and internet access.

The most popular routes for travellers include destinations in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the Bahamas. According to ticket sales, the most popular destinations are Miami, Florida; Civitavecchia (Rome); Barcelona; Trieste, Fusina, Ravenna and Marghera (Venice); and Piraeus. These destinations offer a mix of history, culture and natural beauty that appeals to a wide range of tourists.

“The average length of a cruise varies considerably, from mini-cruises of three to five days to longer voyages of 14 to 21 days or even longer. The most common cruises last between seven to 10 days, offering a good mix of options on board and on land. Activities are numerous and varied, including Broadway-style shows, live music, casinos, cinemas, swimming pools, gyms, spas, and a wide range of sports and recreational activities. In addition, modern cruise ships are equipped with children's clubs, water parks and play areas, making them an ideal choice for family trips,” said Daiana Mediña.

For the best prices and availability, especially during peak season and special dates, it is recommended to book at least six months in advance. Thus, most cruises include in their base fare most meals on board, which are usually of high quality and varied. Passengers can enjoy buffet breakfasts, à la carte or buffet lunches, formal dinners in the main restaurant, snacks throughout the day and non-alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages and meals in specialty restaurants are usually at an additional cost.

It is important to note that cruise lines implement various measures to ensure the safety and health of passengers on board. These include strict cleaning and disinfection protocols and emergency preparedness with qualified medical personnel and state-of-the-art equipment. In general, there are no physical impediments that prevent a traveler from taking a cruise, however, it is recommended that people with mobility problems or certain health conditions should consider their specific needs and consult with the cruise line before booking.

Cruises have evolved to become an accessible and attractive travel option for a wide range of travellers, offering personalised experiences and a variety of activities both on board and in port. With a significant increase in demand during certain times of the year and a diversified offering of routes and services, the future of cruise tourism is promising.

In this way, COCHA is positioned as a leader in cruise tourism, offering its clients a wide range of options and personalized services.
