Marriott International Highlights ESG Progress in Serve 360 ​​Annual Report

Marriott International, Inc. highlighted recent global Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) efforts and progress toward its 2025 Sustainability and Social Impact Goals

This year, the company also published a companion report titled “Highlights from Around the World,” which showcases region-specific ESG initiatives spanning Asia-Pacific excluding China; the Caribbean and Latin America; Europe, the Middle East and Africa; Mainland China; and the United States and Canada. Marriott also produced a “Performance Tables and Appendices” document with key supporting data and insights.

In support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Marriott’s sustainability and social impact platform, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction, guides the company’s ESG efforts through four focus areas, or “coordinates”: Nourishing Our World, Sustaining Responsible Operations, Empowering Through Opportunity, and Welcoming All and Advancing Human Rights.

Among the 2023 developments, the report details data on corporate diversity, sustainable operations, volunteerism and other ESG activities led by Marriott associates and hotels around the world. Highlighted initiatives globally include:

To advance climate action, the company:

It verified its science-based short- and long-term emissions reduction targets with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in April 2024.

Launched the Climate Action Program (CAP) for all managed and franchised properties globally, focused on increasing climate understanding across the organization and developing specific carbon and energy reduction targets for properties to support progress toward the company’s scientific goals.

Marriott continued to expand the company’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure. By the end of 2023, more than 7,100 electric vehicle chargers had been installed at more than 1,800 Marriott properties around the world.

The company also focused on expanding opportunities and delivering on its core value of Serving Our World:

They volunteered more than 3.1 million hours in local communities around the world during 2023, with more than 12.1 million volunteer hours reported since 2016.

Responded to the devastating wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, contributing approximately $5.5 million through the Marriott Disaster Relief Fund, TakeCare Relief Fund, Marriott Bonvoy points donations, and cash and in-kind donations from hotels to support recovery efforts and provide essential items for affected associates.

They have pledged to hire more than 3,000 refugees worldwide by 2026.

Trained more than 1.2 million managed and franchised associates in human trafficking awareness since 2016, toward Marriott’s goal of training all associates at properties by 2025.

They launched an industry-first initiative in collaboration with the Internet Watch Foundation and Cisco to block websites containing child sexual abuse material from guest networks at nearly 5,000 managed and franchised properties in the United States and Canada.

Highlighted initiatives in the Caribbean and Latin America include:

The release of approximately 110,000 sea turtles was supported through conservation programs on several properties in Mexico, with the goal of protecting the species and their habitats.

They worked to reduce food waste by implementing technology and collaborating with local community organizations. Several properties in Brazil and Mexico donated more than 19,000 meals to people in need.

Hotels in Brazil, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Grand Cayman and Mexico have been working on installing on-site solar panels to reduce their carbon footprint.

They engaged with Tent Partnership for Refugees to develop and implement a long-term recruitment program in markets across Mexico. In 2023, the region hosted a recruitment event that resulted in three refugees being hired at Marriott hotels in Mexico City.

More than 1,100 partners across the region participated in the Mind Matter 2023 series, with the goal of understanding and learning from experts on mechanisms to improve mental well-being.
