More than 34 million tourists will arrive in Mexico´s hotel rooms from January to May 2024

Tourism Secretary Miguel Torruco Marqués reported that cities registered 19.6 million tourists in hotel rooms, and beach resorts received 14.7 million tourists

Torruco Marqués announced that, during the first five months of 2024, the arrival of tourists to hotel rooms was 34.3 million tourists; of which 24.5 million were national tourists, that is, 71.4% of the total; while 9.8 million were foreigners, which represents 28.6% of the total in the 70 centers monitored by DataTur.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) said that, from January to May 2024, cities registered 19.6 million tourists in hotel rooms, while beach resorts received 14.7 million tourists.

He said that during this period, hotel occupancy reached 60.3% in the 70 destinations monitored by DataTur, maintaining the same percentage compared to the same period last year. 

He reported that, from January to May 2024, city destinations registered a hotel occupancy of 52.6%, that is, 0.9 percentage points more in relation to what was recorded in the same period of 2023, while beach resorts reached an occupancy level of 68.9%.

Torruco Marqués indicated that, during the first five months of 2024, the tourist centers that stand out for hotel occupancy are: Playacar with 91%, Akumal with 83.9%, Nuevo Nayarit with 81.8%, Cabo San Lucas with 79.6%, Cancún with 78.2% and Playa del Carmen with 77.4%, these being the destinations with the highest levels of occupancy.

He stressed that, from January to May of this year, the average number of available rooms reached a level of 437,466 units, that is, 0.4% more than the same period last year. 

For beach resorts, in the period January-May 2024, there were an average of 207,204 available rooms, while in the same period in 2023 there were 207,114; while, in city destinations, the average number of available rooms was 230,262, which represents a growth of 0.6% compared to the same period in 2023.

During the first five months of 2024, the average number of occupied rooms reached 263,908 units, which is 0.3% more than the same period of the previous year. 

For beach resorts, an average of 142,828 occupied rooms were recorded; while in city destinations, the number of occupied rooms was 121,080, which represents an increase of 2.4% compared to the same period in 2023.

The head of Sectur emphasized that the hotel industry is the backbone of tourism activity, and reiterated the increase of 87 thousand new hotel rooms from 2019 to 2023, totaling 895 thousand rooms, which consolidates Mexico in the seventh position worldwide in hotel infrastructure for the enjoyment of tourists, generating more economic spillover and benefits to the local population, thus complying with the instruction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to make tourism a tool for social reconciliation.
