The Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Mexico (Sectur), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism of Mexico City (Sectur CDMX) and UN Tourism, held the Regional Course on “Tourism and Social Inclusion” in our country, with the purpose of promoting non-discrimination, favoring economic and social participation in equal opportunities; and incorporating all sectors of the population, especially those in vulnerable situations.

In this way, Sectur, through the General Directorate of Professionalization and Tourism Competitiveness, UN Tourism and its operational arm, the UN Tourism Academy, carried out this course in person in Mexico City, from July 15 to 19, in coordination with Sectur CDMX.

The objective of the course was to share with participants knowledge, tools, skills, as well as provide opportunities to discuss and put into practice topics relevant to tourism and social inclusion.

In opening this important meeting, the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, stressed in a message that the practice of tourism should not be a privilege for certain sectors of the population, whether it be those who want to practice this profession or those who seek rest and recreation.

Officials from the Ministries of Tourism of 15 states participated in the course on Tourism and Social Inclusion: Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Quintana Roo and Tamaulipas. In addition, officials from five countries participated: El Salvador, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Uruguay.

The head of Sectur pointed out that inclusive tourism requires the joint participation of the government, the private sector and social organizations. Only in this way will we generate the appropriate conditions for inclusion to become a reality.

“In this regard, I would like to tell you that the New Model of Tourism Development in Mexico proposes a comprehensive, inclusive vision of shared responsibilities with key stakeholders, promoting concrete actions to address the various situations that the sector presents,” he said.

Torruco Marqués invited the participants to continue working to make tourism a tool for social reconciliation, as instructed by the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Also participating in this professionalization meeting were César Garizurieta Vega, in charge of Affairs of the Undersecretariat of Tourism, representing the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués; Ramón Martinez Gasca, General Director of Professionalization and Competitiveness; Nathalie Desplas Puel, Secretary of Tourism of Mexico City; Claudio Vidal Blaires Peña, Programme Manager of UN Tourism Academy; as well as Natalia Ragno and Ramiro Ragno, facilitators of UN Tourism Academy.
