The Andes 1972 Museum: a place of homage and introspection in Montevideo

The purpose of the establishment is to represent the 45 people on board that fateful flight and to spread the values ​​and honour the creativity that have characterised this event.

The Andes 1972 Museum is located at Rincón 619, in the Ciudad Vieja neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay. Today, it is the first and only museum in memory of the plane crash in the Andes Mountains in 1972. It opened its doors in 2013 on the initiative of its founder, curator and director: Jörg PA Thomsen. Its purpose is to pay tribute to the 45 people who were on the plane and to spread the values ​​that emerge from this story. It aims to keep this inspiring and unique event in the world alive in the memory of the general population.

The museum consists of three levels, displaying original objects, interactive information panels, and videos about history. The collection of materials includes coats, letters, shoes, and accessories kept by the families of the deceased or survivors. In the basement of the building there is a space that pays tribute to the Chilean muleteer Sergio Catalán, who is considered the hidden hero of history. On the third level, a timeline can be seen that provides a daily account of important events that occurred at the same time in other parts of the world during those endless 72 days.

Visitors can tour the museum on their own or book, for an additional fee, a guided tour for groups of up to 12 people. The tour takes approximately 90 to 120 minutes, and they will be accompanied by experts on the subject. In addition, the place has a gift shop where you can buy some of the various books that have been written on the subject, some written by experts and others by survivors themselves.
