Inbound tourism had a total of 583,821 visitors, which is 22% less than the same quarter in 2023, but with an expenditure of 289 million dollars, 4.28% higher.
As usual, Argentines and Brazilians were the most representative foreign tourists in the country.
Regarding Argentines, the number of visitors was 267,661, which is just 2% lower than in the same quarter of 2023, but in terms of spending, there is an increase of 30%, reaching 131 million dollars. A possible cause of the increase in spending by Argentines is seen in the increase in stays from 4.7 in 2023 to 5.4 days in the 2nd quarter of 2024.
In the case of Brazilians, it must be taken into account that this quarter was affected by flooding in the neighboring country, which generated complications from the lack of air flights to the possibility of arriving by land.
In any case, 71,593 admissions were recorded with a total expenditure of 40 million dollars.
As for outbound tourism, there has been a significant decline, mainly due to the economic changes that have taken place in Argentina, which no longer generates such an important attraction when it comes to travelling.
A total of 605,792 Uruguayans traveled abroad, 49% less than in the same period in 2023, and spent US$ 307 million. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, there is a decrease of 591,221 fewer people who left the country.
Tourism Minister Eduardo Sanguinetti said that the data “reflect the performance of the sector despite the challenges and unforeseen circumstances. We have seen some results that, without a doubt, invite us to reflect and be moderately optimistic.”
