With the growing demand for innovative solutions that can revolutionise the way we experience and interact with destinations, the sector is on the brink of profound change as a result of technological advances. The Ministers’ Summit, taking place on Wednesday 6 November, will discuss the transformative potential of AI and emerging technologies to shape the future of travel and hospitality against the ethical implications of their implementation.

This year, the Summit, organised in partnership with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UN-Tourism) and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), will be moderated by a well-known BBC journalist, and will bring together both the public and private sectors to ensure a fair but thought-provoking debate.

This year’s Summit, which is being held for the 18th time, is part of World Travel Market’s TravelPower campaign, which aims to convey the potential of the tourism industry to drive positive change. Ministers will discuss how AI promises enhanced experiences and streamlined processes, and how to ensure these advances are compliant with ethical standards.

Another key point of discussion will be the importance of equitable access to AI technology to prevent existing socio-economic disparities from becoming even more entrenched. Ministers will discuss the best ways to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that all stakeholders, regardless of background or resources, have access to the benefits of AI in tourism – one of the key priorities set out in the UN Secretary-General’s report on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development.

WTTC has published a number of reports on the potential impact of AI and believes that AI can play a key role in delivering a personalised and enhanced experience to travellers now and in the future. Meanwhile, UN Tourism is a leading driver of innovation in the global tourism ecosystem, supporting start-ups and promoting increased and better-targeted investments in the sector.

Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director at World Travel Market London, said: “The Ministers’ Summit represents the largest annual gathering of Tourism Ministers in the world. As such, it plays a pivotal role in acting as a platform to discuss key issues and find solutions to shape the future of our industry.

“There has already been much discussion about AI and other emerging technologies and how to fully harness their potential to create positive change. It is therefore timely that the opportunities it offers our industry are discussed at the highest level as we continue to contribute to a positive future for the tourism sector.”
