In commemoration of World Humanitarian Day, Avianca, together with its business units Avianca Cargo, LifeMiles and Deprisa, highlight the progress made thanks to the work with foundations and allied organizations in the region, with which it has been possible to support causes focused on three main axes: emergency response, health and volunteer transportation.
During 2024, this support has included the transport of more than 100 tons of humanitarian cargo in countries such as Brazil and Colombia, the mobilization of 260 volunteer doctors who assist care brigades in rural areas and the benefit of more than 600 families through the delivery of food.
In response to the floods that affected Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, Avianca Cargo and GOL joined forces to transport 50 tons of humanitarian aid from Campinas International Airport (VCP) to Porto Alegre Canoas Airport (QNS) to benefit families affected by this emergency that occurred at the end of April.
In Colombia, in the context of the fire emergency that occurred between January and February in Bogotá, Avianca delivered 138 kg of humanitarian aid including non-perishable food, blankets and face masks to ABACO, who in alliance with the District benefited the directly affected population in the eastern hills of the city.
In line with the above, in collaboration with Airlink, the company facilitated the transport of 462 kg of essential chemotherapy medications, destined for 900 patients of humanitarian programs at the Buen Samaritano Hospital in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
Avianca has a successful model of working in Partnerships for Development through which it works to continuously strengthen existing agreements with key organizations, generating a significant social impact in vulnerable communities. This effort has allowed for joint work aligned with the company's business model, strategy and vision, applying the best practices of the airline industry.
Thanks to the LifeMiles Miles Bank and in collaboration with TECHO Internacional, the airline mobilized a group of 12 volunteers between January and February to carry out construction and housing interventions in the context of the forest fires in Chile, benefiting families and including people with cognitive and mobility disabilities.
Avianca also collaborates with partners such as the Colombian Civil Air Patrol, Wings for the People, and the Operation Smile Foundation to provide health brigades to rural areas in Colombia. These efforts have mobilized 250 medical volunteers, benefiting more than 2,000 people. The brigades of the first two partners provide basic medical care to vulnerable communities, migrants, pregnant women, senior citizens, and the indigenous population, while the Operation Smile Foundation specializes in treating children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate.
“We are convinced that our aircraft, beyond being a means of transportation, are transformative elements, and generate development for the benefit of the communities and regions where we operate. That is why on World Humanitarian Day, we reaffirm our commitment to contribute significantly in times of crisis and to strengthen the resilience of the most vulnerable populations. Through collaboration with local and international organizations, we will continue working to offer fast and effective solutions that make a difference in the lives of thousands of people,” said Felipe Gómez, Director of Institutional Relations and Sustainability at Avianca.
